Oct. 20th

I awoke to snow on the ground this morning. There was intermittent wet snow throughout the day, but it won’t last. We are expecting it to go as high as 20 ( degrees Celsius) this weekend. Gotta love Ontario.

Today husband and I had “ meet and greet” appointments with our new family doctor (if you regularly read my blog, you may recall that I was without a family doctor for a while and this proved to be very difficult when I found out about my breast cancer diagnosis. I spent a lot of time making phone calls and fighting tooth and nail, but now we have one). Anyway, the doctor is about 40 minutes away, but I really like her and was very pleased with today’s chat. After dealing with two nurse practitioners and now this fairly brief interaction with my new doctor, I realize that my previous doctor who is now retired was not the best fit for me. I didn’t realize it at the time because I had nobody with whom to compare, but I found out more, and had more tests with the nurse practitioner in the very short amount of time she covered my care!

The leaves have been especially beautiful this past week. They are falling pretty steadily with today’s wet snow, but there are still lovely vistas.

Husband continues to work hard on the “ insulation project”, putting up stud walls in our very old basement, and using various kinds of insulation, as well as improving wiring and heating ducts. This will all help improve the astronomical bills to heat “ this old house”. We received notice that there is a possibility of natural gas coming to our village. That would be fabulous and our heating costs would be even lower.

I will end with a slightly miraculous picture I took today of the two boys sharing a mat. As Murph (tiger one) grows up, he is becoming less of a royal pain to Scooter ( black and white tailless one).

There are multiple mats on the kitchen floor, as a lot of dirt gets tracked up from the basement ( currently a dirt floor before Radiant heat and concrete goes down).

  1. Back in my day of multiple cats, two "boys" only got along if one arrived as a baby and pestered any available cat for cuddles and licks and the possibility of a nipple. And the boy cats either tolerated it or left.
Cleveland Clinic reorganized and swept a bunch of us geriatrics into a geriatric practice. I like this new doctor, but am reserving final judgement.

    1. When my mother was elderly and doing poorly both physically and mentally, she was seen by a geriatric doctor. It was the best thing that happened. You are very different from my mother in terms of your mind and your abilities, but who knows. It might be a good thing.

  2. I'm so glad you finally found a family doc and more important, that it's one you like. That's a hike -- but what a huge relief. Michgan's Upper Peninsula got a big snow -- 18". Fortunately, we don't have that yet here. Love the cat pix! That's a keeper.

  3. It took a lot to get a doctor ( and there are many, many Canadians in the same boat), but I’m happy with how it turned out. When you live where I do, everything is a drive. Fifty minutes to the closest decent movie theatre, an hour and twenty minutes to the closest Costco, and two and a half hours to the hospital that’s been taking care of my tests and treatments.
We certainly didn’t get 18 inches. Just enough to cover the grass. We’ll leave that volume for November!

  4. I have no complaints about the care I'm receiving from the staff doctors at our local hospital in Pembroke. Unfortunately they are all telephone appointments, and I'd really like to have a face to face with somebody. These telephone appointments are usually luck of the draw, so rarely the same doctor twice, but they all seem to have access to my records and keep them up to date, so that's good. These days my biggest complaint is finding a doctor who can give me an alternative to NSAIDS to deal with the fibromyalgia. THAT is not happening. I'm so glad to hear you got a primary care physician with all that you have going on. Whew!

    1. Oh dear, that’s too bad you can’t have face to face appointments. Sorry to hear you’re not having luck on the fibromyalgia home front.

  7. So happy you found a fit with the new Dr. It took me 30 years and multiple Gyns
to find the one I have had for the last twenty plus years. It is lovely to have someone whom one doesn't feel that they have to fight for anything they get with someone who is supposed to be an asset for your health care.
Keep on healing and enjoying a healthy life!

  12. Very handsome kitties. Glad to hear that you & your husband have gotten a GP doctor at long last. I am so glad we switched to natural gas a few years ago, at the time we also switched our fireplace from wood to gas. I enjoy the convenience of a gas fireplace, but miss the smell & feel of a wood fire. We also made sure that the gas fireplace doesn't need electricity to run - our little village looses power often & for long periods.

    1. Oh wow- we are pretty lucky and have had very few power outages. We have a wood stove in the den but the heat doesn’t really travel throughout the rest of the house, especially upstairs. Our old house was not built with an open floor plan! Ha ha!

  14. That is good news! It is so stress-relieving to feel confident in your doctor. And snow already! Well, some parts of our state (West Virginia) had a bit this week too, but I am not ready for it

  15. I have a nurse practitioner now too as the doctor I was seeing moved away and they haven't replaced her yet. Seems like there is a lack of doctors that want to go into private practice. My NP is wonderful, tho, and very thorough and kind so I am happy to see her.
I am glad you have found a doctor that you like. That is so important for your care.

  16. Very glad to hear things on the medical front are looking up and going better for you. You're fortunate to have a handy hubby who is competent and able to do all the remodeling in your basement. Dealing with a dirt floor would be the pits! I know you both will be glad to see the end of that.

    1. The dirt floor was originally coated with some concrete ( very thin coating) but will be done properly along with a sump pump for those occasional snow melts that go along with very early spring rains.

  17. Yuck, snow. It's supposed to hit here in southern Sask on Sunday. I'm not ready for it despite having lived here all my life.
Good to hear you were able to find a family doctor who "fits". I have a family doctor who doesn't but the hassle of finding another seems to be far worse than dealing with him once or twice a year. I'd re-think that decision if our interactions were more frequent.
Enjoy the warmer weather this weekend!

    1. It’s luck, really. I would have had to accept whatever doctor I could get. I only got bumped to the head of the line because of my current health condition. I am grateful that she seems really good!

  18. When our son Kris would bring his cat Eiko home and our Shania was still with us, one had to live upstairs and the other downstairs.

As Maebeme says our snow is supposed to arrive on Monday. Hope it does not stay very long.

    God bless.

  19. Today, it is no small feat getting a good family doctor. I'm glad you are working with an excellent skilled practice. Your renovations are moving along nicely and floor heating is outstanding; even better, just in time for snow season. The kitties look pretty content sharing a rug..

  20. Happy for you that you found a doctor who's a good fit. We haven't been able to find a doctor since we returned to Kamloops from WA state in 2014 but have been happy with the nurse practitioners we've been assigned. We're moving to Saskatchewan soon and the hunt for a doctor will begin all over again.

    1. Oh dear. Best of luck with that doctor search. Here in Ontario it is almost impossible but I’m not sure if Saskatchewan has similar issues.

  21. You have a beautiful kitchen floor and the cats are both so pretty. I just love cats! Glad you found a good doctor. I had my first appointment with a new doctor on Thursday, and really liked her.

  23. That is fabulous news about the doctor! Good stuff. And just like that, spring is back in Ontario for the whole week. You gotta love this province. Well, we may as well enjoy the beautiful weather for as long as we can.

  24. Wonderful news about your new family Doctor! That must be a relief for you both.

Cats can be really funny. I've had some that really like to interact with each other and I've had some who had such distain for their 'roommates'.

  25. Glad you found and like your new family doctor. That four letter s-word made me shiver, but those fellas looking cozy on the rug warmed me up.
