O.K., Jeanie, I just finished Louise Penny's latest book, Kingdom of the Blind. The best part of the book was the end, not the actual ending, but the "Acknowledgements" at the end. Is this now really the last Gamache novel?
There were a couple of events at the end of this book that disappointed me. I like characters to remain true and consistent. They are characters, not real people. Real people do sometimes take different directions and make unpredictable choices occasionally. The characters in Penny's novels, well I wanted them to stay who they were. Not my decision, however.
If anyone else has read this book, please feel free to join in on a little impromptu book club here. Bring your own wine.
Haven't got it from the library yet so, no spoilers, please! Or put a warning on the entry.
ReplyDeleteDone.
DeleteI am reading this series in order and am almost up to this book. In an earlier book I was upset at how one character acted, and really betrayed Gamache. But I love the series and am continuing to read it; I know what you mean about wanting Penny's characters to behave!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you are reading them in order. It is much better that way so you don't miss essential events and character development.
DeleteYou're the second blogger recently who has recommended Louise Penny. I've never read her, but may have to start now! After the seven new books (from the library) I have on my night stand. Yep, seven.
ReplyDeleteI have two library books that I have now renewed twice and haven't read yet (because I've been reading this one which was on order).
DeleteThe first Penny novel I had read.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed it.
Linda
Glad you did. If possible, read the other ones in order. It helps to understand things.
DeleteI finished "Still Life" and enjoyed it very much. I've passed it on to my Mom, who is reading it now (despite the curled pages - I was reading it in a nice relaxing hot bath and dropped it!) Now I'm ready to start "A Fatal Grace." Thanks for the recommendation!
ReplyDeleteI still remember Still Life. I read it so long ago. Enjoy the rest of them!
DeleteTo commenters -- it's very important to read these in order. The characters evolve tremendously over the series and you may get confused if you jump the gun.
ReplyDeleteJenn, I'm wondering. I'm worried.
No, it's not about being worried, it's more about tying up some loose ends and characters ending up doing things that are unexpected, but not bad.
DeleteI just finished the book.....I have read them all........I love the characters, and the way she writes....it is a comforting read, somehow. I loved the way she explained it all at the end......
ReplyDeleteI want to ask you about a couple of things, but I don't want to mess things up for the others who haven't read the book yet.
DeleteI just got an email notice that Louise P. has another Gamache coming out in August. So, not the end. Whew!
