cat pics, sunset, beef for Joanne

Quite a gripping title wasn't it? I will first begin with the beef. I was reading Joanne's post over at  Cup on the Bus where she was describing how her granddaughter, a girl much more mature than I ever was at her age, might think about making a pot roast. Her granddaughter wondered if she could make it in a slow cooker. A bunch of comments ensued. The whole thing made me think of making roast beef, so that is what I did tonight. But, instead I used my "magical cooking pot", so called because everything turns out perfect in it.

It's never the same and I never measure, but tonight's roast was seared on all sides first, then I put it in a few tablespoons of tomato sauce (stole that idea from one of the comments on Joanne's blog), a good shaking of Worscestershire sauce, a shot of red wine (nothing says classy like wine in a box!) and a few shakes of "The Keg" steak seasoning. Then I cooked it slow and low in the oven (325 degrees until son came home from work at about 7:15 p.m.) I didn't keep track of time, but did check every once in a while to make sure the liquid was still sufficient.

My magical cooking pot (Dutch Oven) is a Kitchen Aid brand, but I know there are others out there. Mine was a fabulous price, on sale at Canadian Tire.

It turned out moist and wonderful, by the way. Mashed potatoes, carrots, corn, gravy, little frozen President's Choice Yorkshire Puddings, and a few Brussel sprouts for me. Sunday night supper.

A couple of nights ago, the sunset looked like fire on the horizon.

The picture doesn't do it justice. You can see some of the Christmas lights displays in the park across the road.

And now for some pet pics.

-Scooter rolling on the lawn (he's a bit of a idiot)

-Samson being disturbed mid-grooming

-Scooter's first chance to lick out the tuna can

And that's it. That's my Sunday night.

  1. I remember when my dog was still alive, when she had canned food she would often lick every last bit of her meal out of her bowl.

  2. Haven't had a pot roast for ages. A nice way to cook beef and makes wonderful gravy.

  3. Ah I recognize that box of wine! I've read that brussel sprouts are the new in veggie - yeah finally they get the recognition they deserve. I also have seen some amazing sunsets. Cats - thank you for sharing your little darlings (heart heart heart). ... Mary-Lou =^..^=

  4. I have a similar red magical cooking pot - two, actually - they are Le Creuset - pricey but you can't go wrong with what you cook in them. I'm making a pot roast in it tonight!

We had the same amazing sunset last night!

  5. My sister cooked in one of those heavy pots. Wonderful stuff came out. And, when I actually cooked, years ago, I had a cast iron pot with a lid. It came with me to the old house, but I think I lost it to the auction pile when I sold the house. The slow cooker did a good job, though she skipped searing because google says you can skip that part. Someday she'll see it done, or hear it from an "authority" and she'll sear.

  10. Delicious, and probably when I go shopping next, a roast will come home with me...You do get lots more flavor from searing. Enjoy the season, Jenn!

  11. Joanne's post inspired me to throw a roast in a heavy pot too. Some days we wake up and don't have a clue what to do for dinner, then someone mentions something like this and you have to do it!

  13. These types of meals are simple and delicious. I should get myself a dutch oven. I think I'd really enjoy it and put it to good use.

  15. Your Sunday sounds pretty perfect to me. Isn't the Dutch Oven wonderful? I have Food Networks -- works fine and less expensive than Le Creuset! The roast sounds delish. Haven't made one in a long time and will have to add this to the list. I love that you don't measure. I don't either except baking and maybe the first time making something. And your cats -- so adorable. Big smiles here!

  16. Your cats are so cute...I get that look if I interrupt grooming time too lol...I have to be on the look out for that dutch oven. Ct is having fabulous 90% off sales lately. I got a wok for $29.99 marked down from $119 last week. I have slow cookers, but I need a really good dutch oven style pot too, and I'm not in the league of "Creuset" prices!!! Beautiful sunset!

Hey wine from a box will do, classy is as classy does lol...

  18. What a yummy, sweet post! I don't have such a pot, but I bet I could do this in the slow cooker.
I hear you about restaurants. We ate today and were the last guests for lunch, they close at 3. It was so peaceful!!!
