"Treating Myself" Feb. 4, 2024

I am now the proud owner of an air fryer. But, if you know me, I didn't go out and buy a $199.00 Ninja special edition or whatever is out there. I bought one from somebody in a neighbouring town for $40.00 through Facebook marketplace. It has barely been used from what I can tell and came to me very clean, along with the manual.

I've been curious about air fryers and this is the perfect way to decide if I would really use it all that often without making a huge commitment.

So here's my question: for those of you who have already taken the plunge into air fryer world, what do you make that's really great, convenient, surprising, yummy, etc.? Also, do you line the tray with anything?

Thanks ahead of time for any and all suggestions.

Meanwhile, it is a beautiful morning, in my opinion. There is a thick layer of frost on all branches and it looks magical. It likely won't translate well into pictures, but here are a couple:

As you can see, we don't have much snow. I'm not complaining. Have a lovely Sunday!

  1. Congratulations on your air fryer! You'll have fun experimenting with it. I did with mine at first too. (I never lined the no-stick basket). It cooks things nicely, but I can't say anything was better than what I was already doing with my toaster oven. I ended up using it mostly to roast veggies and hot dogs (last few minutes in the bun toasted them nicely). The biggest complaint was that mine was so small. When I had to replace my toaster oven late last year, I got a convection model, which is the same principle as air frying. It holds more so I use it more.

  2. I haven't got an air fryer so I shall be interested to hear how you get on with yours. Love the frosty photos.

  3. I hear great things about the air fryers, so I hope you find that it will be a useful addition to your kitchen. I haven't got one, and probably won't. My kitchen could almost step out of the 40s, lol. Except for the microwave, the food processor, and the immersion blender, which I love.

  4. I haven't taken the air fryer plunge but everyone I know who has one raves about them.

  5. We needed something fast, so got a cheap microwave to get us going in the right direction. Our combination oven/microwave died a couple of years ago and we couldn't stretch to a new one. Secondhand is a good way to try something new.
I've looked at some, but the business end looks so small... looking forward to hearing how you get on with it

  6. I used my air fryer when I first bought it, and I still do use it at least once a week. I like to do air fry chicken and porkchops in it, and I happen to like how it cooks sausage - it keeps the grease in one place and no splatters on the stove. But my son doesn't like how it crisps up the sausage skin. I did a meat loaf in it once but I prefer the oven for that. On the other hand, the next time we have fish, I plan to use the air fryer. It's obviously great for French fries - remember to shake the basket frequently, and I like to reheat pizza in it as well. The latter takes just a few minutes to reheat and tastes as good as it did when first made.
I've not tried roasting veg in it - thought that sounds like it could be good. I've read you can bake in them as well, though I've never attempted this.
Have fun with it, and if you don't like it, I'm sure you'll be able to sell it for what you paid for it.

  7. You don't mention what brand or style air fryer you have. We were given an "air fryer" that did only that... air-fryed. Didn't use it much, gave it away. But when our Aga was on the blink, we had to buy something that we could use to cook - besides the microwave (which we only use to heat up things). So we bought a Breville Smart Oven Air-Fryer toaster oven. It does everything and we use it daily. It toasts, bakes, air-fries, etc. Best thing we ever bought... but not cheap. And yes, I put aluminum foil on the bottom to make it easier to clean out toast crumbs, etc.

  9. Beautiful frost pics, we don't have an air fryer but so many people are talking about them as being the way to cook. I shall be interested to hear how you find it.

  10. No air fryer here either. But I do use my toaster/convection oven a lot rather than heating up the big stove oven. Beautiful pictures of your hoar frosted trees and bushes. We've not seen any frost like that in a long while. Just more snow melting, and melting, and melting.

  11. When my toaster oven gave up I was very happy as it was a piece of junk. Then I saw a Ninja 7 in 1 oven. It is only a wee bit bigger than a toaster oven and I love it. Mostly I use it for toasting, re heating things and baking. It will fit a Costco Shepards pie or lasagna. I have not air fried anything. The temperature can go at least up to 400f so is good to make pizza. I do use it every day and have only used my big oven once since getting this. I made a big mac and cheese in big oven but next time I will try the ninja. Gigi

  12. I haven't got an air fryer but my daughter does. She works so it's great for her. Food gets cooked quickly and the kids can do their own cooking too. She uses it everyday.
Interesting reading everyone else's experience, or not, with one

  13. Your yard is so pretty! and I won't be of help in the air fryer department, I bought one and just didn't like how the food came out - gave it to my kids, who haven't used it yet.

  14. Your frosty landscape pictures are beautiful. I do not have an air fryer. I've heard mixed reviews. Some love them and others not so much. I think you got a good buy on a air fryer and it should be fun to experiment.

  15. I don't use my air fryer as much as I really should. I make fries, potato cakes, warm pizza up, and have made fried chicken in it as well. You got a great deal, and all I can say, from what others tell me, is experiment. I know people who actually bake in theirs.

    God bless.

  16. Love your frosty landscape (on a 26 degree centigrade day). Sorry, don't have an air fryer.

  17. No air fryer here either. I read when I researched about them they cause cancer. I stick with my slow cooker. The pictures of your property are beautiful.

  19. In our region it was a glorious weekend of sunshine, such a treat. I don't have an air fryer, but looking forward to hearing about your reviews after a stint of using. I'm still wrestling with the idea of getting a bread maker ... Mary-Lou =^..^=

  20. I have an Instant brand air fryer that has two trays and a drip pan, so clean up is really easy -- just slide them out and wash them. It has multiple settings, including dehydration. I use it a lot. Probably my favorite is chicken drumsticks, air fry at 390 degrees for 20 minutes. I also roast veggies, make homemade French fries, and warm up leftovers. I also make toast in it (with the two trays, I can make up to 8 slices at a time. I use it a lot.

  21. We don't use it that often, but when zucchini was in harvest, we loved making "fries" in the air fryer. I do want to try making fish "sticks" with cod in ours, but just have not done it. I use my crock pot more often. I buy liners from Amazon for our air fryer. It has trays, which we do not like. I had the bucket kind, but traded with my Mom a few years ago. We may either get rid of this one or buy a bucket style one.

  22. Air fryers are the rage. I do not own one but everyone I know that does revs on them. You got a great deal. I hope you enjoy your new air fryer.

  23. I bought a 5 quart basket type air fryer about a year ago. I use it frequently. It makes leftover pizza the same as fresh. It's good for warming up just about anything that was fried. Many products that we used to cook in the oven can be cooked in much less time in the air fryer. Google and YouTube are very helpful.
One of my favorites is chicken cordon bleu, or the broccoli and cheese stuffed version from Sam's. Fish turns out really well, and quickly! Also, bacon cooks with no grease spatters. Grilled cheese sandwiches. Can do the bread first, turn it over, add cheese, just a few minutes. My air fryer has "shake" notification. And I bought a set of reusable silicone basket liners from Amazon. Just put them in the dishwasher. I think you will enjoy yours.

  24. I love my air fryer. French fries turn out great as do chicken tenders/nuggets types things. I haven't fried anything in years. You can grill chicken breasts in there.. roast veggies.. Love it.

  25. No air fryer here so I can't help. I know people swear by them but I don't have the room! Looking good outside for you. We have zero snow now. But you never count on anything like that in Michigan in February!

  26. Our air fryer is the most used small appliance I've ever owned. My boys warm up leftovers in it constantly. (The microwave makes leftovers soggy apparently.) My favourite thing to make in it are roasted potatoes. I toss the chopped potato pieces in a mixture of olive oil, salt, pepper, chopped or powdered garlic and Italian spices. Then I cook at 400 degrees until the potatoes are cooked through. With my air fryer filled, it usually takes 25+ min.

  27. I don't have an air-fryer but interested to read the comments. I bought my first microwave a year and a half ago and have hardly used it. I still prefer my oven. My builder says his wife swears by her air-fryer and uses it for just about everything and they are marvellous and the oven is now virtually redundant. He is usually pretty reliable in his judgement about things so I reckon if he thinks an air-fryer is good then it probably is!

  28. I'm with Rachel Phillips. No air fryer and my microwave blew up several years ago and we don't miss it. Let me know if you like it or not.

  29. First off, I don't have an air fryer but I'm interested in buying one too. The frozen trees are perfect, they are lost in the photo but we can imagine the real ones! Have a beautiful week.
