How much Downton can One Person Watch?

Yes, I realize I am probably the last person on Earth to start watching Downton Abbey. As I am still very cautious about using my back (how can walking into my kitchen holding a bag of sugar activate a spasm???) I've been binge watching Downton Abbey. I know, I know, most have watched the whole series, but I believe I'm now on season 4. I'm a coffee drinker (obviously... hence the name of my blog), but I've revisited tea drinking. You just cannot watch Downton without tea in your hand, or sitting on your bedside table.

My favourite quote (and I've left a bit out of this quote, so forgive me) is, "All life is a series of problems which we must try to solve... until at last we die." This was spoken by the character of The Dowager Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley.

Before you start to give me advice about my back, trust me, I'm pursuing things, have appointments, have taken action, am on prescription muscle relaxants (and yes, for most people they cause extreme drowsiness, but I've always been the one for whom the small print applies... no drowsiness here!).

Also, no spoilers, please. At the moment, Carson has been asked to head up some war memorial, Edith is visiting the home of the farmers who took in her baby, and, god forbid, the local school teacher has been invited to the Abbey for a gathering to be Tom's guest.

I know... last person on Earth.

  2. Nope, nope, nope. *I* must be the last person to never have seen even the first episode of Downton Abbey. But, it's on my list for this winter watching. So far, I've not heard of anyone who watched and didn't like it.

Sure hope you get your cranky back cured. That's got to affect all you do . . . or want to do. Grump, grump. No fun!

  3. Nope, not the last person. I've never seen an episode and at this point, have no intent to do so. I tend to prefer crime and medical dramas.

Darn, I was hoping your back was improving. Good luck with the appointments and meds.

  4. My friend deals with spasm too. So I've seen how painful this is. Downton is great and I also enjoy watching the stories and cast of characters. Hopefully your docs will find a good solution for you.

  5. I watched it first time around, and watching it again.
My daughter did a back whoopsie setting out cat food a few days ago. She was on the floor in agony and had to cal 911! The doc put her on bed rest. I took her my really big heating pad when I went to get her dog. Goodness knows she can't walk him.

  6. No, you're the second last person! I haven't begun to watch the series yet. Guess I'm saving it for a rainy day! I hope your back improves soon!

  7. How much can one watch? I watched the whole thing. And since then, I've watched the whole thing again at least once and some episodes more than once. And I don't care that I've seen it before. I love it.

Take care and I hope the back eases soon.

  8. I’ve never watched an episode but did go to see the film. Was at a loss as to who all the characters were.
Now we have reliable internet maybe I’ll start watching the series - and there again maybe I won’t😊

  9. Looks like you are the 4th person in the world to watch Downton. I haven't even begun.

  10. I can't watch any Downton. As regards backs, bags of sugar really can activate spasms. How about changing the toilet roll? I really hurt my lower back a few years ago and have had repeats since. I try to train myself now to always support it whatever I'm doing - e.g. pouring a kettle I press lightly with my other hand on the work surface (and don't splash hot water on it!). Anything to protect it all the time. It takes time to work it all out but I'm sure it's helping.

  13. I came late to watching Downton Abbey as well. I'm such a lover of the past that seeing those antique filled rooms and the period clothing was a feast for the eyes. I watched quite a few episodes with my sister and we always felt red wine called to us when we heard the theme music begin to play. I loved Violet's quote about life being a "series of problems me must try to solve". I've just come through a "tricky" few days so the quote actually made me laugh out loud.
I hope your back issue eases up soon.

  15. Thank you for the comments, everyone. I see am not alone! However, now that I've started, I'm finding it impossible to stop. (I'm watching it on Netflix).

    1. We've not only watched it... but bought the series CD... and watch it again if nothing good is on. And yes, I think the Dowager is the best thing in the show... and has the best lines!

  16. Love Downton and rumour has it there's another moving in the making. Love your reference to the Dowager Countess as your spirit animal!

  17. Someone should write a book entitled: Thoughts to Live By, by the Dowager Countess. My wife and I watched the first two series this past summer, but then stalled out... I agree; we can't watch British productions without a cup of tea - a cuppa

  18. We were way behind watching it too, and like you, binge-watched. Watching it that way, I became acutely aware of how much of the show was people angsting about who to marry, if someone would marry, and who not to marry. i got kind of jaded with the whole affair, honestly. Still, had to watch it all, LOL. And last year we watched Upstairs, Downstairs and were struck by how closely the Downton story line mirrored the older show.

I hope your back is recovering. There's nothing like a serious hurt like that to slow a person down. I don't know about you, but being in pain can make me crabby because there is so much I want and need to do, but hurting makes it all such an effort. Sending virtual hugs, don't think you want the real ones right now.

  19. I watched the whole series and might start re-watching it this winter unless PBS airs something really good. Watching these fantastic productions kind of ruins regular TV for me. The Dowager was one of my favorite characters too.
