The Glow of the Leg Lamps

I am not normally a movie person. Husband is. Daughter is. They can watch movies for hours. Husband will watch his favourites over and over (and over). He loves historical movies, war movies, epics (lord save me from an epic), "kung fu" movies, the list goes on. I don't have the patience for movies. I'm usually doing something else at the same time. I don't want a movie to unexpectedly scare me. I don't want to cry. There are very, very few movies I will watch a second time.

Except at Christmas. One of our family's favourites is "A Christmas Story."

We watch it every single year. We have the dvd. In the story, set in the 1940's, a little boy, Ralphie, desperately wants a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. Everyone tells him he'll shoot his eye out. His mother is long suffering and his father has a special relationship with the furnace. His father also likes to enter contests and is always hoping to win a prize.

As luck would have it, the father does win a prize, a "major award" and he is so thrilled with it, that he displays it in the front window for all to see.

Yes, its a leg lamp. Ralphie is enthralled. His mother is mortified.

Cut to our home. The village has been assembled once again on the bottom two shelves of the sideboard made by husband.

You've seen it before. It's a tradition. Sometimes new little pieces are added to it.

But now, if you look up...

waaaaayyyy up... (Canadians get my reference?)

there is a glowing set of lights above my crocks.

Move in a little closer...

Yeeeessssss! Our own little leg lamps. It doesn't get better than that!

  1. Now THAT'S classy! (And of course I got the reference -- I loved The Friendly Giant when I was a kid!)

  2. I don't like most Hollywood movies but I love films. The older I get the less interested I am in being entertained as a way of passing the time. An "action packed" film telling the same old story is 80 minutes off my life. A film has to do more than merely entertain me

  3. HaHa! Leg lights..Great!
I went out with a one legged lady once..
I used to call her limped..! :)
All those years, l used to hang my
stocking at the end of the bed, l used
to get an orange, colouring book, sweets,
    chocolate..as l got older..l began to wonder
when am l gonna get a stocking with a leg in
    it..? :).

Your village on the two shelves looks really
nice, l have something similar on one shelf,
but it the crib..! It looks nice all lite up!

I watch most films, though not Romantic comedy,
cowboy films, though l liked the 'Dollar' films,
and l like Christmas films, old B/W ones! And,
    plenty of snow..!
Rudolph the red nosed reindeer roasting nicely
on an open Barbeque..HeHe! Bless! :o).
Merry Christmas! ๐ŸŽ„ Ho Ho Ho ๐ŸŽ…Merry Christmas! ๐ŸŽ

  4. So that's what a leg lamp is. A lamp with a leg. Ok. You know the reason why.
I don't like movies either. I prefer a series where you can watch half an hour, an hour and then go on to something else and watch more later. Now and again I click onto a movie I like and want to watch and its usually in the middle already. We dont have netflicks or anything similar. Mind you, sometimes anything in english is preferable to a greek film or serial. I can only take so much.
Your village is of course simply wonderful

  6. OMG - I can't believe you have leg lamps! That is one of my all-time favorite movies and I watch it every year, too. I am the only one in my family that is not a movie person. I blame it on my total lack of focus. Your Christmas village is beautiful!

  7. I have never heard of leg lamps until now. We have naughty nutcrackers in the shape of a pair of feminine legs.

  8. Loved the Friendly Giant and so did my children.

    God bless.

  9. Your Christmas village is lovely. The leg lamps . . . well, I understand the reference, but if I put up a string of them, my family would definitely be making an appointment for me come the first of the year. (Isn't it grand that we're all different?!)

  13. Love those lights! I can't stay awake long enough to watch movies these days. Paul and my daughter just adore all those corny, low budget, Christmas films.

  14. I'm not a movie fan either, but I love the animated ones. Those leg lights are awesome! You have a wonderful day, hugs, Edna B.

  15. Oh, this is SO great! I love this movie -- it's one of my favorites and I could watch it over and over. it's a must-see at Christmas. We've had our own "Christmas Story" moments and one time we ended up giving Rick a bar of Lifebuoy (or some reasonable facsimile) on his Christmas Eve dinner plate in reference to a tense incident earlier in the evening!

  16. Those are awesome. The little store in my village is unlit this year, closed due to covid.. Nobody’s noticed.

  19. I. Love. Those. How cool is that. My husband would be delighted. And yes, he's one who will watch the same movies over and over. I ask him if it came out different this time, LOL. But I admit I have favorites too, that I watch again and again. And like you, I used to not watch movies at all, just didn't have time for them. But about 5 years into retirement I finally slowed down enough to enjoy them, and now it's a winter routine for us.

  20. Oh my that is funny! I've heard of the movie but never watched it. Like you, I'm not a movie person. It took three attempts to get through the animated, "The Grinch" on Netflix.

    Enjoy!

  24. I love your post! I've never seen that movie, but now I want to. I am not a movie watcher either. Especially going out to see a movie. I feel like two hours of my life slipped away while sitting in the theater. Your little village is absolutely beautiful. I love the crocks! and that string of leg lamps! :)

  26. I have to admit I've only seen this movie a handful of times. It is a classic and very funny....the father, the furnace. :)
I love your village and your leg lights. Merry & Happy!

  27. I am not much of a movie person either. I like watching things about real people doing real things, but am for some strange reason, hankering after some traditional Christmas flicks this year, and may be going to the library later today, as there is nothing on TV. Love your village and those super rows of crocks waaayyyy up. (Rusty and Jerome anywhere nearby?)

  28. I love that movie. So wholesome and not corny. Just a hilarious honest look back at a wonderful time!

  29. “You’ll shoot your eye out Ralphie!”
I love that movie and I like you am not a binge movie person. I usually can’t hold still long enough to do it.

It’s hard after being gone from my kids and grandkids for 14 years to reestablish families traditions. So I’m kind of making new ones that include my sister and her family now and also mine. When Geoffrey was really sick we didn’t do much of anything simply because it wasn’t in the cards. So it’s like having Christmas and new and establishing traditions and getting in the swing of things that way.

Perhaps when my grand girl comes up after Christmas to spend a few nights we will have to watch Ralphie and the crew.

Love the village and your leg lamp!

  30. Family in-jokes are the best and I'm sure the fairy leg lights always make you laugh. I don't know the film but shall look out for it now.
