Squirrel!!!

Yes, the title of the post is a "Christmas Vacation" movie quote, but it is also the topic today.

I thought I would share with you something strange in our midst.

We have at least two of these squirrels. They are black squirrels, but their tails are blonde.
Somebody thought they'd dye their own fur in our time of Covid because they couldn't get in to see their regular hair dresser?

Run away!!

  1. Squirrels! I went to UP (movie) with squirrel. Your little friend has quite the tail statement going on. I have seen a few in our neighbourhood with red tails; someone said it is the mating of a black & red. I think more likely a grey & black getting together. ... Mary-Lou =^[..]^=

    1. I would be surprised if it was black and red. The red squirrels are smaller and have a lot of attitude!

  2. I love it when you do a food post..! ;).
HeHe! Eaten a few squirrels in me time..
    Skinned, cleaned, gutted..skewered onto
a stick, painted with barbeque sauce..
five minutes each side on the barby...Nice!

The Canadian black squirrel is a mutation of
a pigment gene that can happen in both grey
and fox squirrels that makes their fur black..
They are more aggressive and territorial than
the grey squirrels too, and the result is that
the black squirrels will usually run all the
other squirrels out of an area...

So...If you need to know anything about black,
grey, red, or pink squirrels..! :). I'm the
one to ask..! HeHe! Nice one..! 'Nuts' l say! :o).

    1. We have grey, black, and red. The most aggressive are the red. I tend to eat more conventional animals - cows, chickens, pigs.

  3. I've seen a few people post photos of these strange squirrel tails on FB. Hmm?

    1. Oh, didn't know that. I'm not on Facebook. So I guess they are in other areas as well.

  5. Squirrels used to get me all wound up and I had to learn to pretend they weren't there. One day I got so close I had his tail fur in my claws before he ran up the apple tree. Wee blighter thought he'd gotten clean away, but the crows that lived in our garden in those days had other plans for him. You've never seen a squirrel run so fast....

    1. Our cats were never bothered about squirrels, but are terrible with chipmunks. I feel sorry for them. (the chipmunks I mean)

  6. What a cute squirrel. Ours are smaller and not black. They are comical to watch and drive both my black lab and my inside cat bonkers.

  7. How cute! Reminds me of the squirrels we have down home (Moore County, NC). They were called fox squirrels.

  10. No squirrels 'down here' but plenty of possums- even one with a big bushy tail like that! Love 'em or loathe 'em we can't do anything with 'em because they are a 'protected' species

    1. I had no idea that possums are protected! Quite certain that squirrels are not!

    2. They can be a problem - here in Melbourne they've be protected for a long time now. Can't even relocate them:(

    1. Really!? I just assumed everyone had them (the regular black squirrels, not this odd hybrid).

  12. I'm not a fan of squirrels (rats with bushy tails) but that is interesting. We have both black and grey squirrels around here and also I occasionally see a red squirrel which is more the size of a chipmunk. They got into my attic one year, being smaller, and made a heck of a mess!

    1. Oh red squirrels are the king of squirrels, even though they are much smaller. They scold us from the trees! They have no fear!

  13. We don't have black squirrels here in northern Minnesota. Just the small red squirrels and occasionally a bigger gray squirrel that are usually seen farther to the south. Yours certainly does stand out with that blonde tail!

    1. Black, grey and red - we have them all. I don't love them. They bury walnuts everywhere, including flower pots, planter boxes, gardens... (I don't really love walnut trees either). But yes, this guy and his buddy are a whole different thing altogether!

  14. Look at that! Where I live there are three distinct kinds, red, black, grey. They intermix nowhere; any intruder is chased out or done in.

    1. I would have thought so as well. I have watched a grey squirrel chase a black squirrel around and around a tree. And of course red squirrels have "little man syndrome" and boss everyone around.

  16. HAHA! The results of no hair stylists right now :) We used to see squirrels like this in Kingston from time to time.

  17. I love it -- the squirrel stylist is in quarantine! I've seen some interesting hybrids of squirrels but this is the most specifically marked I've seen! Nice find!

  18. I have never seen ones like this - but - we do have a few albino/white squirrels here in the city and I have seen a couple of those - very odd looking.
The bluejays and finches have returned but haven't seen any cardinals as yet. The deer are wandering down more - a few have been spotted in the local cemetery and more than one has crossed a city street - startling drivers. The coyotes are also getting a bit bolder so you do need to be aware.
