Here is a picture of a quick 10:30 a.m. gathering:
I honestly think I could have been a great homesteader, if it weren't for the lack of modern dentistry, the outhouses, the backbreaking work of washing clothes, no electricity, and no benedryl...
I'm getting ready to make some salsa today. It won't be super hot, just some jalapenos (no seeds). Son wants it hot, so I might start by filling some jars with the regular, then introduce a hot pepper (not shown in picture - they are little cayennes, turning red now) into the remaining salsa and bottle the rest (labelling accordingly).
(For my own future reference, this is a bit more than six pounds of tomatoes, some Romas and other regular kind - the amount needed for this salsa recipe).
It was hot, hot, hot here in my neck of the woods for the past couple of days, but then we got a good downpour of rain which cooled things off. I actually don't mind the heat. Let's all remember January and February, people!!
I am ready to get back into the swing of supply teaching. I booked a two day stint on Monday and Tuesday of next week. It is in a 4/5 split, but at this time of year, it will feel more like a 3/4 split, which I'm very comfortable with. I also booked a hair appointment for Wednesday of next week. It is time. I'm starting to get that "you've got long hair and just pull it back into a pony tail and not care what it looks like" hair. I need to change it up and feel good about my hair again (lord save me from frizzy, unfortunate hair --- thank you Scottish ancestry).
Have a good day, all.
That looks delicious.
ReplyDeleteI watch a You Tube channel of a sort of homesteader, Little House on the Mountain. I love it, but my niece assures me you get dirty taking care of chickens and growing things in the dirt takes a lot of work. :) She makes it look easy.
True about getting dirty taking care of chickens. I have shoes / boots that never step foot into the house and I’m constantly washing my hands.
DeleteWe got a storm which really cooled things down. I think autumn might finally be on its way. Hope you have a few months of cool autumn weather. Days to enjoy.
ReplyDeleteHot salsa? I think I'd go for mild. Good bottling... Canning to you
I think this might be described as “ medium “.
DeleteI was hoping for rain today, but nothing so far. I prefer a medium salsa, not too hot. I hope yours comes out well.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about your sister this morning. What a scary time that was! And what a crazy resolution. I am convinced that the more we avoid pills, the better. If we xan, of course. Some we just have to sick it up and take!
I homesteaders for about 8 years, and still cling to a few remnants of that time. It was hard work, yes, but I was young and loved it all. I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. My sons feel the same, except for one, I think. They had experiences, like making molasses, living without electricity, etc, that very few of their age have had. As myboldest said, he can keep up with any old-timer when the talk turns to " back in my day"!
Making your own molasses! Now I have to look that up ( no, I’m not going to try it!).
DeleteThose are perfect looking tomatoes and peppers. Still awaiting the rain. I do believe the humidity has lessened as of mid-morning today. Happy canning and teaching.
ReplyDeleteRaining here right now- 2:51 in the afternoon. Thanks, Rosalea!
ReplyDeleteMmmmmm, tasty plans!
ReplyDeleteRoasting hot in London today. 30 degrees ! and no sign of rain yet.
ReplyDeleteTomatoes look lovely. :)
It's been cooler here the last couple of days; I suspect it will be on its way to you soon.
ReplyDeleteDo enjoy your supply teaching next week!
I also made some salsa recently but without the hot peppers. You have a good crop there! Some animals have got into my tomatoes, just taking a bite out of the easy to reach ones!
ReplyDeleteHa ha! I like to think I would have made a great homesteader too. Then I remember things like running water and central heat/air and I think naaa....I'm good. Those veggies look great. No salsa here this year, I'm just tossing tomatoes in the freezer to use later.
ReplyDeleteYou have grown perfect vegetables. There is nothing better than home grown fresh vegetables right from the garden. Your salsa sounds delicious. Medium heat sounds perfect to me. Like your son, mine loves hot spicy food as well. I cook things medium and then have lots of jarred hot sauces for those that like it hot.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how I would make it as a homesteader. I am spoiled to electricity and precious A/C....there is no way I would make it in the south! I have a super recipe for homemade salsa that Inever make anymore because it takes hours and it's gone within a couple of weeks! But it is soooo good!
ReplyDeleteMy goodness those tomatoes look good. We seem unable to achieve ripe tomatoes, even with a greenhouse at our disposal.
ReplyDeleteIt is always important to be proud of, and thankful to your ancestry :) But if your new spouse is of a different ancestry, there has to be some serious discussions before the wedding. For my Czech husband, cabbage and onions were the most important vegetables; he thought my Russian potato and pickled cucumbers were awful. We both love fresh tomatoes, thankfully :)
ReplyDeleteIt was hot here and now cooled off again. At least I got the front garden semi-unweeded. (It will never be totally unweeded unless I dump a gallon of weed killer on it and apart from the ethical issues, it would kill the plants I actually l want to keep!) I made a big batch of tomato sauce yesterday -- about 4 quarts -- and more tomatoes to use before they go. This season moves fast. Your salsa looks wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI would not have been a good homesteader.. Everytime I read some historical fiction I thank God for the century I was born in.
ReplyDeleteI am mad-jealous about the toms! Lucky you to have such !
ReplyDeleteIt is fall here. Quite cool. I love fall, but want to soak in a few more days of warm sun. Your tomatoes are huge. Salsa sounds good.
ReplyDeleteAll those tomatoes! They're gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI laughed at your homesteader comment; I feel the same way!!
Look at those lovely ripe tomatoes!!!! I often think the same way you do about homesteading or in todays lingo being a farmer's wife. At least now we have power.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
