I watched some videos on what to do to your young pepper plants to have a bountiful harvest. You are supposed to cut off the top of the plant after it has been growing for a bit, even if you are snipping off some blossoms. This forces the plant to branch out from the top and create more stems which will produce more blossoms and potentially more peppers. I did that this year (although it's hard to do, much like thinning carrots and beets - you feel like you are killing off growing baby plants). Here is the result!
I'm impressed! I didn't do anything different in terms of fertilizer or watering. I'll be doing this every year from now on.
Beautiful! I start my peppers a little earlier than most, just so I can prune them, and pinch off those early buds. The plants are much sturdier and able to hold the fruit when they do bear.
ReplyDeleteWow, just BURSTING with peppers!
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed with the result. I cut the tops off the tomatoes and the branches. I wish I had thought to do this to the peppers.
ReplyDeleteOh, well there you go… I never think to do that with my tomatoes!!
DeleteMy garden was a big failure this year because of the monsoon rain we kept getting.

Very nice! I've only got two peppers this year, though I've had more in the past. I'll have to keep this in mind for next year.
ReplyDeleteWell done.
ReplyDeleteI cook all the time with chopped leeks and capsicums, and will pay some attention to what you suggest.
ReplyDeleteI've got to try that! Thanks for sharing. (Who says you can't ALWAYS learn something new??)
ReplyDeleteI will try that with mine!
ReplyDeleteNow that is an impressive amount of peppers. Must tell Harvey he needs to try this.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I have never heard that, but squirreling it away for next year!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to do a bit of pinching out right now!
ReplyDeleteI have not heard of that, but I will pass it along to my husband. His peppers were small this year. Have a great Sunday!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard that, but will be sure to try it.
ReplyDeleteI love when stuff like this works out. Very cool. Cheers, Ivy.
ReplyDeleteI wonder though. I've had lots of gardening tips over the years and the scientist in me wonders if anyone has done any experiments to prove/disprove these sorts of advice? With that said I've done a lot of clipping plants for exactly the same reason and I recall it was OK.
ReplyDeleteI always plant Zinnias every year. I get young six packs for earlier bloom. So many years ago a friend told me to cut the first bloom off! It was hard to do, but she was right! Zinnias do exactly what your peppers did!
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing what a little know how can do. Your plants look very prolific. Good Job!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing that! My peppers always seem to struggle every year, so I can use all the tips everyone has to offer.
