Blogger - What ARE you doing?

So I just tried to do something simple, something I've done countless times, which is to replace the header photo on my blog. I've tried five times now and it is not complying with my wishes. So, I will just leave it for now and hopefully whatever glitch is happening will remedy itself in the next few days and I will try again.

Also, I spent a ridiculous amount of time a couple of days ago going through my list of subscribers to get ready for the loss of Feed burner. At first, it said I had over a thousand subscribers, but of course, most of them were spam porno junk emails which I deleted and deleted and deleted. I then went over to Mailchimp and got a free deal from them and watched a mailchimp video to help me figure out what I'm doing. I got most of it figured out until it came time to try to incorporate it onto Blogger. The info on the video is for Wordpress. So, if you are someone who actually subscribed to my blog and got email notices from me, I apologize if this never happens again. Mind you, you won't be getting notifications, so you won't be reading this, so you won't know anyway.

Sometimes I wonder why I bother, as I am not some big blogger phenom influencer, but just some woman from Ontario who blathers on about her garden and doesn't really even reveal a whole lot about my personal life. However, I really do enjoy other people's blogs and would miss them if I didn't read them. In fact it's a regular part of my morning routine. So perhaps I'm a regular part of someone else's routine too. I just wish I didn't have to fuss with things when they change with Blogger. Writing and publishing a post should be enjoyable, not a task.

Has anyone else had trouble with images and header photos? Has anyone tried doing the Mailchimp thing themselves and been successful?

  1. I had issues with posting photos a couple of weeks ago (using the same method as always) which Blogger would not accept. I just waited 24 hours, tried again, and all was fine. I'm not moving my email subscriptions to Mail Chimp. I figure if anyone legit DOES subscribe to my blog that way, they'll find another way to do so if they want notifications to continue. Like you say, I've read that most email "subscribers" are simply junk porno spam bots so farewell to them!

  2. Leaving comments is becoming near impossible too!

  3. This could be a North American thing, but stick with it. I get notifications from you, otherwise this comment wouldn't be here. Different regions have different geeks, with differing abilities. It will sort itself out.

  4. So far I haven't had any problems. I will try changing my header photo and let you know.

  5. No problems here so far, but I have read other bloggers who are having the same problems as you.

    God bless

  6. Knock on wood here. No problems so far, but as other bloggers have said, I do know others ARE experiencing all kinds of glitches. :o(

  7. I used follow.it instead of mailchimp. It wasn’t hard and there were instructions for wordpress and blogger. Then I tried to delete the feedburner “subscribe” button. That took longer, but I eventually figured it out.

  8. Oh, Jenn, the pain!!

I thought to preempt this day for my 6 email subscribers and I fell down a rabbit hole of tedium and and have made things rather overcomplicated for myself. I didn't go to Mailchimp owing to its Wordpress bias but tried to get onto Tinyletter and was immediately barred for being a spammer. Which gave me pause, hahahah. I found a guide to getting onto something called Feedio, which seemed to work but thought it might be something scammy as it has zero profile when you google it. I finally plumped for Convertkit and then found that everything ends up in junkmail until you get your own website, blah blah. More unnecessary complication but in the end I'm sticking with that one since I spent so much time on the whole project. Oh, and it requires composing a "newsletter" without spam trigger words, so my already scanty blogging output has become even more so!!

  9. Jenn - please stick with it! You're a regular part of my routine and I would certainly miss you.

  10. Jenn, I had the same problem when I changed my header photo today. Hope they sort it soon!

  11. Kay at Musings warned us the header function isn't working properly and not to touch ours until Blogger resolved its issue. It wasn't in time to save you. We just won't look at your header for a time.

  12. Blogger often messes with things that were fine and makes them more difficult. I have no idea how it decides which photos are "first" within a blog post or why it won't leave your header photo the way you want it. And this Feedburner thing sounds equally annoying. :/

  13. Well I've never been smart enough to change my header and now my daughter is too busy to fool with my silly blog to help me. I used to really enjoy posting but since Blogger changed, well, it's no longer fun but more like a job. I hate it! For me, the print size changes and if I decide to remove a picture in my post, it throws everything else off. I just hate it. I do enjoy your blog. You are such a great writer.

  14. I changed my header a few weeks ago and all went well, but just a day or two later another blogger attempted to change hers and ended up with the same issue you have. I don't know that I have anyone who is signed up to follow by e-mail (and have no clue how to check). No experience with any of the other sites. I follow your blog through the follow button on blogger and your post shows up in my reading list.
I do find since these last few "improvements" were made that my fonts will change all of a sudden. Photos have to be added one at a time or they appear in reverse order. It's all a mystery to me.
But like you, I'd miss not reading blogs, and I'm always disappointed when someone decides to shut it down or just plain old disappears.

  15. Thank you, everyone who commented on this. It is reassuring sometimes to find out that others are also having problems. For a while I thought I'd simply forgotten how to do it (disturbing!). I will try to fix my header photo again in a few days. I'll also try to create a slightly less "complainy" post as well. ;)

  16. I updated my header and side panels 10 years ago and dare not touch it since. Wanted to add new stuff but am too afraid to risk messing it up and I am not all that savvy with applications. Dropping in fr Malaysia. I like writing too and have been keeping journals and decided why not start an online journal. Keep blogging cos every one's life is different, hence interesting. Following you

  17. I used to change my header in the early days, but it was such a faff to resize a picture to fit, now I don't bother. I used to load photo's in blocks of five, which worked well for years, now they appear out of sequence so I have gone back to loading one at a time. I have no idea about Feedburner or Mailchimp, never heard of them before. If people want to read my blog they should put a link in their Favourites box and click on that if and when they feel like it. I generally blog hop, I don't need to go to every one every day. I flit about when I have a few minutes.

  18. How odd about the header photo- changed mine about a week ago with no problem.
Hope it sorts itself out for you

  19. No problem here. But I have no idea what to do about subscribers emails. Most of my readers are friends or family but whoever they are they'll probably forget about me without an email. I did try to follow instructions on the blogger site but damned if I could work it out

Jenn you are part of my morning routine :) ... Mary-Lou =^[..]^=

  21. I read you almost every time you post, and would miss your blog if you ever quit. I enjoy the blogs of ordinary people, not those trying to become names. I am always curious about how other people live, especially in other parts of the world. I am not going to bother with trying to move subscribers; they'll find me soon enough if they want to. For me my blog is my journal. I'm glad when people read and comment, but it's important to me to write it. My sons and grandkids don't read it, but I'm betting that when I'm gone it will be valuable to them.

  22. Yep, I’m a regular, so it matters not. I do have you listed on my blog sidebar, so I automatically see if you have posted. Have a perfect weekend!

  23. I haven't attempted that since I've been back, but I temporarily messed up my post dates (as you know), because I didn't know where this 'new Blogger' was hiding things. I got it sorted out, but I definitely won't be touching my header photo now. What a mess.

  24. I dare not mess with my header photo these days after hearing so many bloggers mention their woes with the platform lately. Too bad, I used to love playing around with the header and layout.

  25. You are a regular part of my routine.

  26. I never change my header but I do get annoyed when things change from time to time and I have to learn how to navigate the new way. I only have a few followers but a loyal little group which is lovely. I have all the blogs I like to read bookmarked and just check in each day to see if there is anything new. I would also miss you and enjoy reading along even though I only comment now and again. I always read all the comments too.

  27. I saw your post on my friend, Betty's blog, and came right over. Oh my gosh, the same thing happened to me a week ago when I was trying to change my Header to a new picture. When I went back to work on it, my Header SHRUNK and couldn't get it back to normal again. It was so frustrating. After literally working on it for 4 hours, I went to a regular program that I used in the past, and got it back to normal. Every program is different, and this one was more simplified, so you might want to just try a new program. I was using Chrome before and it went all wonky on me. I'm so sorry you're having trouble with it. I'm not good with techy stuff at all, so I don't even remember how I changed it back. The good Lord guided me. I hope you figure it all out. I wish they would just leave well enough alone. : ) Well, it's nice to meet new friends, so hopefully I will come by again.

    1. As I remember, I used Internet Explorer, then at the top of the page clicked on Design, and went from there. Hope that helps. : )

    2. I tried this. Still not behaving the way it should. I have put in a message to Blogger about the problem, although I don't know if anyone actually reads those. Thanks for the suggestion, though!!

  28. I love your gardening blather (and chickens and cat and all else you share!) I'm following you with bloglovin and also with google followers. I went with mail chimp but I hired Linda (lifeandlinda.com) to do the transfer for me and make and insert the widget. I was pretty sure I'd mess it up! I have blogger and somehow she did it so there has to be a way.

  29. I don't make many changes because I'm afraid to mess everything up. I enjoy stopping by to hear about your days. That's what friendly blogging is. Just friends chatting away with each other. I'm sure your header will get straightened out soon. Hang in there. You have a super day, hugs, Edna B.

  30. Jenn the issues with Blogger are always ongoing and it's one thing after another. For the longest time I could not upload a photo. I had to drag it from my folder into the blog post in hopes that it would show up...that or copy the image and paste it but then I had trouble seeing the photo on my post once it was published. The Feed Burner option being gone is a real shame. I plan to switch to Wordpress this fall for my blog because I've had it, Blogger has really become a chore and it's unpleasant to even switch between HTML mode and regular mode. I hope you can fix up your header photo. I think Martha had the same issue a while back on her blog.

  31. We read this when you posted and marked it to come back and comment later. F has a big gripe about things that are meant to be tools (whether of our work or of our enjoyment and leisure) making life more difficult than the immediate benefit they provide. There are times when F feels like a tool of the system rather than vice versa. We blog for fun and light interest. We love to read the blogs other other people writing about day to day lives - the beauty they see, the loves they feel, the disappointments they share, frustrations, joy, pride....It shouldn't need to be made so difficult that the enjoyment of reading and writing like this is lost in the struggle with ever developing technology. Just because something can be redesigned by some clever person with a new idea and something to prove, doesn't necessarily mean the new achieves the objective any better than the old did. So we share your frustrations.

  32. I moved from Blogger to Wordpress years ago on the grounds the latter is less mercurial.
    Overall this is so.
