Chicken Morning

To lighten the mood from yesterday, I invite you to join in my morning ritual. I opened the little chicken door and got my phone ready to capture the morning rush. They really do run and tumble out.

First out of the gates: it's Columbian Rock, followed by Barred Rock, followed by Columbian Rock (nope, I don't name them).

Following close behind... standard brown laying hens.

Wait for me!

Still more...
But let's turn on the light and go inside.

Still on the roost.

Giving me the eye.

She wasn't laying an egg, she was just sitting there.

Although they can eat exactly the same food inside the coop, they get very excited to dine al fresco and wait for me to feed them outside each morning.

On the chicken bench, surveying her world.

And those are my mornings. Have a lovely Sunday.

  5. Do they always come out in the same order - "pecking order" of course?

    1. Yes, often it's the same group that comes out first.

  6. I love your chicken pix. My eldest daughter would love to have a yard full of chickens. "Next year" doesn't ever seem to get here though. You have a super day, hugs, Edna B.

    1. Thanks Edna. Ours don't roam the whole yard, although I would like that occasionally, they are terrible hole diggers (and my neighbour with the perfect lawn would be very upset if chickens showed up on his property).

  9. Aren’t chickens just the bomb?! Hours of fun. My new coop is almost done. I will be able to sit on the front porch and enjoy them as you do.
    Fun post!

  10. They're funny birds! Glad it wasn't one of them taken by the hawk.

    1. I think they'd be far too big for that little hawk. (I hope)

  11. So, each one has her own "bed" for sitting and laying? That's pretty cool, that they know where they belong. They're such pretty birds -- I love their different markings. The coop looks cozy!

  12. Keeping a connection with the earth and with nature has always been important to me. Having chickens and growing a garden keeps us in that mind - where we get our food. We may be near the last generations to appreciate a link with nature. Technology may replace nature in fifty years.

  13. How lovely, reminded me of the tales my grandmother told me of her days of keeping chickens. Having been born in WW2 we had chickens in our back yard for the eggs. I never knew that our Christmas dinners were one of those chickens.

  14. I'd prefer breakfast served outside too, if I had the option.

  15. My parents also had chickens way, way before I was born and my mother also told some amusing stories about them. Thanks for sharing this morning ritual.
