listening to a storm

I'm  propped up in bed, laptop on my lap, and I'm listening to the wind outside. I can hear the tree branches hitting the side of the house and the rain sounds like waves breaking. We are having a high wind alert right now. We can have gusts of wind up to 90 km per hour (which is about 56 miles per hour).

I should really have the light out and be asleep by now. I love the sound around me. Is that weird? I find the whole thing so cozy, to be piled with blankets and hear the low roar and swish and know that I don't have to go anywhere and everyone is home, safe.

My father loved a good storm. In the summer months, he would sit out on the porch sometimes and watch the lightning. He taught us, I suppose, to not be afraid of thunder storms, as so many people are. Our own children slept through most thunder storms.

Weather that makes me nervous is when it seems like tornado weather. Then I get antsy and watch the sky carefully. I also do not enjoy white out conditions while driving. But hunkered down in this wind storm, it's nice. It will lull me to sleep. I suppose it's a bit like what I've been reading on many blogs lately, this notion of "hygge". If I had some beef barely stew right now to eat while listening to the wind, it would be perfect!

  1. I know exactly what you are talking about. In about 5 minutes I am going to bed to read a book. And I love soups and stews. I usually have some in my fridge that just needs to be warmed up. It's nice to come home to after work.

Speaking of hygge, a Canada goose just flew over. Perfect!

    Sleep well.

  2. I'm glad the wind is calm here. It can make the cold feel like the North Pole

  3. I know what you mean. So nice to feel safe and snug in bed but I prefer to hear the rain. High winds can mean a flying roof tile.

  4. your portrait of words is so beautiful i too love such storm noise outside and feel cozy and cozy while being warm in my blanket .
i don't know why but i enjoy it while looking at the rain poring upon the window and howling wind around the house may be it is pleasure of learning too leaning that i am not the one bearing this storm on om body and feeling shaky with cold .
in my native village back we used to enjoy summer storms when nothing was harmful and life was all about playing under the shower of clouds.
wishing you a happy new year friend !

  5. I'm reading your blog, tucked up in my warm cosy bed, listening the to gale force winds outside. Only trouble is, I need to get up, dressed and out in it!

  6. Last night's wind storm was quite unsettling as it was in full force at 2am. Power in/out but thankfully mostly on. This morning I will bundle up to walk the yard to see what other than branches have been blown about - sleep, not much last night, so maybe an afternoon nap; no wait I work this afternoon ... wind that wants to move my house in any season makes me nervous.

  7. Our winds were rough here yesterday as well. They have calmed down and we are going to be having spring like weather later today, but now we have black ice and it is extremely slick right now.

  8. My dad loved a good storm, too. We would sit on the front porch and try to capture lightening with his camera.

  9. Tornadoes make me nervous, too. But I never mind a wind storm (so long as the power and heat don't go down!

You write so beautifully -- it feels like I'm right there with you. And yes, a very hygge time!

  10. I love storms too, as long as everyone is home, safe..and no damage comes of it. Something soothing and awe inpsiring about the forces of nature and the comforts of home.

  11. Me too! Don't like trying to travel in this weather (snow here) but I don't really have to do it. I've just enough soup left for dinner and a chicken-white bean stew on the burner for the coming days. Stay cozy.

  12. My mother was absolutely PHOBIC about storms. Surprisingly, all of us kids love the sound of the wind and the rain and the thunder. I'm so thankful she didn't pass her crazy fear on to us. Think of the beauty we would have missed!
(I could do without all this darned snow though)

  13. I had no idea we'd had a windy night until I got up this morning and heard on the radio of trees down and power out in places - a complete surprise. I slept through the whole thing!

  14. I am one of the few that love a storm. Especially at night when the wind is howling outside - I always feel it is Nature reminding us how insignificant we all are. I love a blizzard.

  15. I know exactly what you mean. I love a good storm. Thunder and lightning are the best. And howling winds are so neat. We had the same weather as you yesterday and it was extremely windy with periods of rain. But also very mild. The weather has been crazy lately!

  16. I too love a good storm, and also sit outside to watch. However, strong wind makes me nervous; I imagine roof tiles flying around, which they often do!

  17. Yours is the 3rd blog I've read this morning that mentions hygge. I hope everything at your house fared well through the storm. We also got a snow/ice storm Tuesday night, but it's to be 59 degrees here today, so everything is melting.

  18. Sounds Hygge to me. The wind is what I don't like. We enjoyed settling in during the Christmas blizzard. A warm fire, lots of blankets, and watching the snow fall. We are a bit too high up to enjoy lighting. I've seen two trees hit since we built here. Ack!

  19. I so agree with you! Tornado weather/storms make me very worried.....and here when the wind blows the dirt so bad that we cannot breath.....I dont like it at all! But I do love a gentle rain through the night!

  20. Hubby and I enjoy the sounds of storms too. And if it falls on a day off ... oh man alive, that's good living.

  21. Me too!
Especially at the cottage...we watch the storms go across the lake...love the Lightning and thunder! Especially when I am safe inside!

  22. Storms are great to listen too. I don't care for them when things start getting rough and they call for tornados. My house seems to be in the path of them here in Nashville. But I love the smell of the rain coming in. thanks for sharing.
