Devoid of Colour

Fresh snow is pure and sparkly, and for some, lovely to play in. January snow is dingy, dirty, tainted. I was driving to work and realized that the world is rather monotone right now. I drive through the countryside and the fields and snow and trees are all varying shades of brown and grey. It is like living in a sepia tone photograph. Except it's real.

I have no doubt that the patches of earth that are showing through the snow will be covered with more snow and that this mid January melt is just a blip. It is a very dull world out there right now, however.

The blanket that snow provides, the whitewash of the world around us, the softening of sharp edges is what makes spring so magical. It truly is a rebirth for those of us who experience a snowy winter. The contrast between the non-colour of winter and the bright spring greens, pinks, yellows awakens our senses, makes us feel hopeful and alive, and gives us a real sense of having survived yet another season.

Alas, I can't let these dreary, lifeless surroundings get me down. We have two more months ahead of us of more of the same. But at the moment, I'm feeling a bit like Eeyore.

"It's snowing still," said Eeyore gloomily.
"So it is."
"And freezing."
"Is it?"
"Yes," said Eeyore. "However," he said, brightening up a little, "we haven't had an earthquake lately."

  1. beautiful writing !!!
i liked the way you express your love for snow though it makes living little hard but yes it opens new horizons to mind and soul to Fell and realize the colorless soothing description of nature .
have safe and lovely days dear !

  2. Well we just can't cope with snow in England. We have so little of it it's not worth the investment in infrastructure. I'd be worried if eeyore ever experienced an earthquake. The stories are set and were written just down the road from me. There was a real poo bridge too. It's been replaced a few times now as it's a landmark due to the books.

    1. That's wonderful! I loved the stories and our kids were raised with various videos (yes, the Disney take on things) and books. Even a Winnie the Pooh mobile over their crib! -Jenn

  3. I love that Eeyore quote - just how I feel too, although no snow here touch wood, cross fingers and toes.

  4. I'm so sorry you're feeling like Eyeore. January's monochromatic theme seems to do that to a body.
No snow here. We're fighting MUD season.
    Think Spring!

    1. I don't know why I always think you have the same weather as us, I need to double check where you live and have a look at a map! Mud can be a bit depressing as well! -Jenn

  5. Eeyore's probably Pooh's most interesting friend. A pessimist's optimist!

  6. I can see how snow would get tatty after a while. Thank goodness for change. Spring isn't exactly in the air yet but I have noticed the days are slightly longer.

  7. A great chuckle this morning. We are global warming, here in NE Ohio. One good snow fall, the balance rain, freezing rain, and temps in the forties to sixties. But, as Eyore said, no earthquakes.

  8. Not to worry, we have snow forecasted next week for snow. Trying to find something interesting to photography has been a challenge this week especially with the heavy rain & fog. This time of year I find far too many days inside make for dreary thinking/feeling. Pooh & his peeps have always had wisdom at the simplest.

  9. If only the sun would shine, the dirty snow and brown trees wouldn't seem so bad.

  10. We've got the same dreary stuff here - except the snow has mostly melted. Hence.. mud.

  12. I know this feeling. Mainers seemed to love their winters. They hibernated. They keep their Christmas lights glowing through those winter months...It helped from becoming depressed. It is beautiful and magical when it first snows however....thank you for sharing such lovely photos Jenn! Brrr....

  13. Eeyore's got it right! It could be worse. Still, my favourite season is spring. Because of what you've written. It is a season of beautiful and colourful awakenings after a dull and dreary period!

  14. We rarely get snow. We had some for a few days but it melted already

  15. That's the thing about snow... it starts out all pretty and then it uglies up, gets dark and slushy and the sky is gray.

Spring WILL be here... it will be.
