Mundane Monday (March 8, 2021)

 Socks.

source

Let's see how we can pontificate about a truly mundane subject: socks.

I worked with someone who hated socks. Even in the winter, she had bare feet inside her boots.

I think a living hell would be having to wear toe socks. I don't like socks that are too high. I need my socks to either match my pants, or match my low boots. I only ever wear "fun" socks if it is some kind of spirit day at school, and then I will wear Christmas socks, or Hallowe'en socks.

I remember those little white ankle socks that had little coloured pom pom balls at the back. They never fit me properly because they were made for girls with cute little size 6 feet. When I tried to wear them, with my likely size 7 or 8 feet when I was young, the pom pom ball wouldn't sit high enough at the back of the shoe.

My husband has gone through stages where he finds a kind of sock that he likes, so he just buys multiple pairs of exactly that same sock.

Little Canadian kids tuck their pant legs into their socks so they can pull on their snowpants without the leg of their pants ending up somewhere around their knee. Then when they come back in after playing outside and take off their snowpants, they often forget to untuck their pant legs and walk around with their pants tucked into their socks.

I have somewhat successfully knit one pair of socks once. It was not a fun experience and they didn't fit right and I will never do it again.

When the temperature gets ridiculously low in the winter time, I will resort to wearing socks to bed. If my feet are too cold, I can't get to sleep. I will then inevitably take those same socks off part way through the night.

When I was very young and spent a lot of time at the farm, I would watch my grandmother use a lightbulb inside the men's barn socks so they would hold their shape while she darned them with a big darning needle and grey yarn. Does anyone even darn socks anymore?

Please share your own opinions and thoughts about socks. Do you wear them? Do you wear socks and sandals? Do you even need socks because you live in a climate where your feet don't freeze? Do you have favourite socks? Thin socks? Thick socks? Ankle socks? Work socks?

  1. When my feet are cold, I do the same thing. I put on socks to keep my feet warm and halfway through the night, I have to take the socks off in order to stay asleep. You have a wonderful day, hugs, Edna B.

  2. Jenn I'm with you about cold feet going to bed. I have quite a selection of "bed socks" which I pull off after about an hour in bed & then play find the socks in the bed in the morning, which the cats think is a game of get the bed monster. My socks lately have been basic black to go with my basic black yoga pants - one must be at least colour co-ordinated even if not dressing for success at the moment, (col). ... Mary-Lou =^[..]^=

  3. I only ever wear socks when I'm wearing outside shoes or boots in winter. The rest of the time my feet are naked! - hate to wear socks indoors at all or outside as soon as the weather warms up. Socks in bed make me feel very strange

  4. Oh, so many socks, so many questions! ;o) I rarely go without socks. Having defective feet (!) I need to wear inserts in my shoes which, sadly, don't fit in sandals. (Sob.) My socks have to match my outfit to the extent, at least, that I'd never wear brown socks with black pants, etc. I have a drawer full of my handknit socks that about a year ago I found I couldn't wear anymore. What the . . . ?? It has to be the wool content in them because they make my ankles itch so much they drive me crazy. I'm sure it's some "nerve" thing. I wear the littl white cotton socks (no pom-poms) inside my garden shoes (with inserts . . . sigh) all summer except when I leave ye ol' homestead and then I spruce up a bit. I do darn socks but only the hand knit ones my dear husband puts a big toe through. Who knew you could incite such a discussion of the lowly sock?

  5. I've got quite a few socks. My favorites are made of soft merino wool--usually mid-calf height worn (only when wearing long trousers). Don't like wearing shoes without socks and my Sherpa house slippers are now so stretched out I have to wear socks so they will stay on my feet. Like you, occasionally wear bed socks when my feet are freezing, but like you usually push them off part way through the night. I never wear socks with sandals. Umm, no. Just no.

  6. I love knitting socks. I'm also one of those people who will wear socks in my Birkenstock sandals. The sandals don't go into the cupboard until we have snow mind you.

  7. Oh my! What a can of my favourite worms!! I am a sock knitter, big time. I have a full drawer of hand-knit wool socks in just about any colour and colour-way imaginable. Few are solid, most are some sort of lace pattern or other. (that keeps the knitting interesting.) I wear wool socks all year long. I have a pair of fluffy wool bed booties that stay in the drawer of the bedside table, that are put on if I go to bed with cool feet. And yes, they are then lumps in the bottom of the bed in the AM! As for darning, yes, I repair the hand knits, particularly Hubby's as they seem to wear out quicker! I have been known to cut off his feet (socks!!) and re-knit the soles as well. As for sandals, sadly I cannot wear them as I have shoe inserts I need to wear, a result of working a lifetime on my feet on hard surfaces...

  8. I would go without socks, but it's too cold in the winter in my mind. I usually quit wearing them around April and don't start wearing them again until December.

Like you, I've knitted exactly one pair of socks and they did not fit. I love to knit but socks are beyond my ability. Since I don't wear socks a lot, I tend to buy $ store ankle socks...they're cheap. And I don't darn them if they get a hole in them, they just get tossed. I do have several pairs of Christmas socks, mostly gifts over the years and ones I wear daily in December.

Last week, while I was at my daughter's we went through her pile of socks (there must have been 40-60 socks) and matched what we could. She finally agreed to toss the rest. She has a bad habit of just keeping them on top of the dryer hoping that the missing sock will eventually show up. I think we managed to match up 10-12 pairs.

    Take care, stay well!

  9. I have some lovely Alpaca socks that I wear in bed, and then kick off halfway through the night. I love my thick walking boot socks. When the weather is warm I prefer to be barefoot.

  10. I love socks and I really have too many. The old ones with holes I use as dust cloths(which really work well.) I like fun socks and have all kinds. I only wear socks with sandals in the privacy of my own home and not all that often. I have lots of favorite socks and I'll buy socks as a souvenir when I travel. I just bought some socks with furry stuff inside and they were great on cold nights, though I usually took them off in the middle of the night because my feet got too hot!

  11. I have been known not to change my underwear daily, but I always change my socks.

  12. I wear two pairs of socks in the house in winter because if my feet are warm than I am warm. I take one pair off when I put my boots on to go out. Once I find socks I like I also buy multiple pairs in the way that your husband does. I occasionally wear socks in bed in winter but take them off after a while when I warm up. I don't wear sandals but if I did I would not wear socks with them. I wear plimsolls in summer without socks.

  13. I too often wear socks to bed in winter, but pull them off during the night so my feet can breathe. I only buy white socks that go up over my ankles as since retirement I only wear white tennis shoes when not having to dress up for an occasion. I like to knit and crochet, but making socks has never interested me.

  14. I wish I could knit socks but hate double pointed needles or circular knitting. Love wearing socks around the house in the winter instead of slippers. I'm like you, wear them to bed when it's really cold but inevitably kick them off sometime in the night.
I prefer short white or black socks when Ch go with either my black or white trainers. In winter I rarely wear any other foot wear. In summer it's bate feet or jandals...flip flops

  15. Ah socks💕 I knit over 40 pairs top down then changed to toe up when I found Wendy Johnsons basic plain pattern, probably made about 18 pairs of that since, I like hand dyed or self striping and use 4dpns....and have very happy friends.
I have wooden floors and wear my woollen socks 6 months as I don't wear shoes in the house. I mostly wear cotton socks in bed if my feet are cold as they are warm but don't make me hot.
My feet sweat easily so I wear sandals most of the year, but have to wear socks with shoes.
I darn my hand knits but not other socks.

  16. I like thin socks. And black, don't ask me why because I ha e no idea. I have 3 or 4 pairs of beautiful handknit socks made for me by friends. Those are a blessing in winter.

  17. Here in Saskatchewan I pull my socks over my pants when hiking during tick season. Works a treat.

    God bless.

  18. I knit the wool socks I wear in winter. I also darn them, with a vintage wooden darning egg.

  19. Throughout the winter I wear black knee socks. At night when it is cold I wear Barbour wool socks to bed. When I warm up, under the duvet, the socks come off. During the warmer months, I do not wear socks.

  20. I had not heard of a lightbulb for a darning egg. What a good idea she had!

  21. My toes absolutely do not like being confined so I am barefoot in the house all year round, wear sandals well into October/November unless it snows and socks and shoes until it is warm enough to wear sandals again. I've been yearning for a pair of reading socks ala Indigo because they look so soft and comfy cozy but my toes refuse to be convinced. If my feet are cold, I'll have a hot bath.

  22. It is so funny you bring up socks. I love soft socks. Today I went for a walk wearing my softest and tallest socks. I pulled them all the way up, but not even halfway through my walk they were around my toes. Drat! I was thinking it was just easier to go sockless in my muck boots. Nice question.

  23. I remember the white anklets of my childhood - the were always slipping below my heel leaving my heel exposed. Ugh! And wearing socks that were too big for me - my mom would fold the extra fabric under my toes! Torture! My sister gifted me a pair of cashmere sleeping socks for Christmas- they don't itch and keep my feet warm at night.

  24. I wear woolen socks almost exclusively. And woolen socks I knit. I have a pair of fleece socks for bed wear in the winter, but I have to admit to a thrilling feeling of freedom when it is finally warm enough to cast all socks aside. As for plain/fancy - since it takes so much effort to knit a pair of socks, I go for wild ones. My favorite pair were knit with yarn dyed under the description of "poison candy".

  25. It is daring to walk about around these parts sans socks as there are a variety of nasty things to step upon. Indoors they are needed to not cause aches and pains; so some reason barefoot on the tile makes my gams ache.

  26. I like socks and have many pairs of different colours and patterns.
I tend to go for an ankle sock and thin, not too thick!

    All the best Jan
