Mundane Monday - Eat Your Veggies - July 19, 2021

I picked my first bunch of green beans yesterday and we've been eating salads made from my lettuce for a while now. Husband is most excited for tomatoes (which are a long way off, they've only just set blossoms) and potatoes from the garden. Daughter's boyfriend absolutely loves beets and is eyeing the ones that are getting bigger. He also like zucchinis. Son likes mostly everything, especially peas. Daughter is very easy going when it comes to most vegetables as well.

However... husband HATES brussel sprouts - calls them alien brains. Daughter hates raw onion (but will eat them fried). Son hates tomatoes but occasionally will challenge himself to eat one cherry tomato. Daughter's boyfriend can barely be around the smell of cucumbers, let alone eat one. Me? I like pretty much any vegetable, but I guess some greens, like endive or arugula can be bitter, and I would chose a different lettuce for a salad.

So here is today's Mundane Monday topic: what vegetable(s) do you despise? Share your childhood horror stores, share your reasons, or just make a list- short or long.

  1. Don't know that I despise it...but the first, last and only time I tried arugula, I couldn't figure out why people liked it! I love all vegetables to varying degrees.

    1. I think it can go bitter rather quickly. It’s one of those things that is better eaten “young”.

  2. I love salads especially in the summer months. Any greens in a salad are good for me and veggies too. Not real keen on bitter greens. How nice to have fresh out of the garden things to make your salads. Yum. Happy New Week. xoxo

    1. Salads are always better at this time of year, aren’t they?

    2. I will eat the 'bitter' greens only in 'baby' form, before they get TOO bitter. Otherwise pretty much eat all veggies.

  3. I am a terrible picky eater😟. I don’t want to be so picky but I just don’t like most vegetables. My mother made me try everything on the table and I didn’t learn to eat one thing. As an adult, I’ve learned to eat salad (green leaf lettuce) and roasted asparagus, carrots and onions. I can eat most veggies if they are in a soup or a casserole. Just not by themselves. I can’t eat raw tomatoes either but love cooked ones as in spaghetti, etc. Any tips to learn to like more things would be appreciated 😃.

    1. No shame or recommendations here! It sounds like you’ve figured out what works for you!

  4. I used to hate broad beans as a child because they were always served really big and leathery. Nowadays I adore them because we pick them as baby beans, or remove their jackets if they grow too big.

    1. Ahh, fava beans. Honestly they’re not terribly popular as a common vegetable you would plant and I’m not sure I’ve ever really eaten them, so I’ll take your word on it!
Unfortunately when I hear “fava beans” the first thing I think of is that Hannibal Lecter (sp?) line from “The Silence of the Lambs” movie.

    6. LOL - fava beans... with a nice Chianti...

    7. Exactly - sorry have no idea why that comment came up five times!

  5. Love ALL veggies here! Hubby, however, isn’t to have green leafy ones due to medication interaction. In years past, we’ve grown our own vegetables. No longer do that gardening work these days.

  6. I don’t like cooked peas but I enjoy snow/snap peas. I don’t like cabbage but eat cabbage salad. I won’t eat raw onion but if they cooked in something like stew or sauce that’s ok.

    1. Raw vs. cooked often makes the choice for people. My kids ate a lot of raw broccoli when they were little rather than cooked.

  7. We grow a few vegies in the garden and also have an allotment plot which is more successful. So far we have had onions, garlic, broad beans, runner beans, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, courgette, lettuce, spring onions, radishes, strawberries and raspberries. I have found that I like veg much better when we have grown it ourselves. I agree with Sue that I didn't like broad beans as a child but now we pick them small and they are lovely.I also always think of Hannibal Lecter when I hear of fava beans but didn't know that meant broad beans. Never liked tomatoes in their raw state until growing our own which are much nicer. Always happy with them cooked in sauce. Don't think there is anything I wouldn't eat but sprouts in small amounts only is best.

    1. Wow, you do grow a big assortment!

    2. We share, between three couples, that is ourselves and two other couples who are friends and neighbours, two allotment plots so have loads of space. We started with one and then the one next to it became available last year.

  8. I like all vegetables except carrots and broccoli. I don't mind grated carrot in a salad in small amounts or carrot in a stew but I don't like them boiled and served with roast meat and gravy like we have here in England. Broccoli I just don't like the taste although it has become very fashionable over the past few years as some kind of super healthy vegetable. When I was a child I don't remember broccoli at all.

    1. You can just boil the life out of some vegetables! My own mother boiled cauliflower to death!

  9. I used to despise Brussel sprouts too -- until a few years ago when I was in a restaurant and had some that were slow roasted with butter. OMG! I was an immediate convert. They're still disgusting if they're just boiled, though.

    1. I'll eat them any way - raw grated in salads, boiled, roasted...

  10. I really don't think there is a vegetable or salad I don't like. \my all time favourites are Baby Beets pickled in sweet vinegar.

    1. My husband prefers beets pickled, the way you describe, whereas I prefer cooked with salt and pepper and a little butter.

  11. I can't really think of a vegetable that I despise. I hated peas as a child because it was always mushy, soft, canned peas but when I grew up and had them fresh, it was a revelation! And I adore all the frequently despised veggies...cabbage, broccoli, collard greens, Brussel sprouts. They're all good to me!

  12. Not long ago I found out I was seriously allergic to onions. The stomach problems we've been doctoring for YEARS was an onion allergy. It's hard to get away from onions in sauces, mixes etc. Man do I miss them. I love onions. I really don't like lettuce. Baby spinach, swiss chard, beet greens, oak leaf, all good.

    1. An onion allergy! I find that surprising, but you must have been so glad to get it figured out.

    2. My youngest daughter is highly allergic to them as well. It's a relatively rare allergy.

  13. I have never tried beets ever. I don't look appealing to me but I have no idea what they taste like. :)

  14. Mushrooms, unless they are fried, literally make me gag. I can find the smallest piece in a salad, on a pizza, in soup and I'm done. I've never eaten okra because I'm told the texture is slimy. That's how I think of mushrooms too.

My kids won't eat green or yellow beans. I blame on a babysitter who cooked just about every meal the kids ate with her. I don't have them often as I don't grow them but did enjoy them as a child.

  15. For some reason for years I wouldn't eat asparagus but now I love it. Can pretty much eat all vegetables (even brussell sprouts). Can't think of any I really despise!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Beets. I didn't like 'em when I was two and I still don't. Pretty much everything else I've grown into although some don't agree with me so much!

    1. Our tastes do change as we grow up. But I still hate salmon (yes, I know that's not a vegetable).

  17. I like all vegetables if they are prepared well, a.k.a., exactly as I like them. Picky eaters abound...

  18. Zucchini is a total thumbs down and I eat brussels sprouts under duress.

    1. Zucchini is something is see more as a filler rather than an actual "dish".

  19. Hated Brussel Sprouts as a kid. Agree that they are edible if roasted and some kind of sauce.

    1. If you have to hide it in a sauce, maybe you still don't really like them. :)

  20. I like most veggies... some of the bitter greens (like turnip greens or collard greens) not so much. As you mentioned some of the young plants aren't as bitter, so if you're growing your own, eat them (like mustard greens) when just sprouted.
Don't have a favorite, but brussel sprouts roasted or steamed and cooked with browned butter and bacon is really good!

    1. Now you've made me realize I don't think I've ever eaten collard greens, or turnip greens for that matter. Anything is good with bacon.

  21. Mr Man & I will eat any vegetable although for diet reasons I cut some out or limit the amount we eat. Lately my favourite thing is baby spinach with fresh basil I've grown, in the recipe "nice lasagna" ... Mary-Lou =^[..]^=

    1. Baby spinach is somewhat of a new thing. Do you ever remember baby spinach existing as a child? I don't. It was always cooked up "big" spinach or those packages of frozen spinach in a box that you'd use in a dip.

      Delete
    2. I remember my Mother would pick "early" spinach which I think is the same thing now labelled & priced as baby spinach. This week when I saw the price of baby spinach, it did not go in the basket, but a bag of "cooking" spinach did $7.49 vs $3.99 ... it's getting baked in sauce so I'm sure there's no difference. Oh those packages of frozen spinach that had to be squeezed dry - oh the horror! I now purchase frozen spinach nuggets, perfect to add to any sauce (except gravy) :)

  22. Growing up my Dad had one simple rule when it came to veggies. If you throw it up you never have to eat it again. So I always ate most my vegetables. I think I was 7 or 8 and we were visiting my Dad’s brother and his new wife. It was the 1970’s and my aunt was into cooking vegetarian. She had made a lentil loaf. I took one bite and told my Dad I couldn’t eat it. He said ‘You knows the rule” Well, I ate a few mouthfuls and let’s just say I never had to eat lentils again! My poor Aunt!
Ironically I have been a vegetarian for 25 years now....but I still won’t eat lentils!

    1. Eggplant isn't really one of those common vegetables here in North America, is it?

      Delete
  24. I can't think of a single vegetable I don't like. The closest I would come would probably be zucchini because I've tried cooking it dozens of ways and it still doesn't have any flavor. Matter of fact, this is the first year I DIDN'T grow it in the garden, so there! The only thing my husband doesn't like is eggplant (I love it) but he will grudgingly eat it. I'm a northern girl so have never tried okra, but have also heard it has a slimy texture which wouldn't excite me.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Now I am wondering if I've ever eaten okra. I know I've never grown it or prepared it myself. You're right, it's not really a northern vegetable.

  25. I'm not overly fond of green or yellow beans but will eat them without complaint if served them, just not something I cook for myself very often. The one veggie that I hate is okra! It is slimy!!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You're in good company with the okra. (See above).

  26. Love all veggies, and okra makes the best soup, where one doesn’t notice the slime so much. I absolutely despise cilantro…I know it’s an herb, but I simply detest the soap taste. That is the only thing that if off limits! Great subject!

    1. You, and my husband, both declare cilantro to be "soapy". I actually don't mind it and like it on fish tacos.

  27. I'm not a fan of broad (lima) beans nor parsnips or most canned veg. My favorites are tomatoes, cucumbers, red bell peppers.
I love going to the garden, picking a big ripe tomato, washing it off and eating like an apple.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The only one that I really can't stand is okra. Slimy and hairy...bleh! It seems like some mutated green bean. An experiment gone wrong!

    ReplyDelete
  29. OMG Jenn...where do I start??? Firstly I can't imagine not liking tomatoes...I'd never have pizza, spaghetti, salsa...I feel bad for your son! :) I remember canned everything growing up, lots of dry heaves and spitting out veggies while unseen. Terrible stuff. Now unfortunately I have so many food allergies, I can't handle any raw fruit or veggie, berries being the exception. I can't digest any peel/skin except potatoes and sweet potatoes. I love cooked fruits. Most veggies (raw or cooked) give me nausea and stomach cramps. I can eat my own lettuce, herbs and tomatoes (if I peel them). When I was in my 20's I was a juicer, I could eat all fruits and veggies, but after burning out and being on those horrid pharmaceuticals, my entire physiology changed. Talk about my life story lol....are you sorry you asked??? ;)

  30. Hate spinach, swiss chard, and do not really care for beets. Love eggplant though and grow it every year. Nothing beats fresh eggplant, the stuff in the stores is vile.

    God bless.

  31. I remember when I was young I loved broccoli. Then one day I came in the house after working outside all day and smelled the broccoli cooking. Something about the smell ruined it for me. It was 20 years before I could eat broccoli again. Now I'm back to loving it and the smell doesn't bother me. Funny huh?
