Happy Birthday and the Week that Was

On Wednesday of this past week, we celebrated our daughter's 21st birthday. We went out for supper at a place we had not tried before and it turned out to be very good! The owner was moving around the restaurant, taking part in bussing the tables and checking that everything was good. He sat and talked with us for a while and was really passionate about his restaurant and the quality of what he was serving. We all enjoyed what we had ordered and the energy of the place was pretty great, considering it was just a Wednesday in a small town.

When asked earlier in the week what she wanted to do for a cake, if she wanted to order dessert at the restaurant, if she wanted my usual chocolate layer birthday cake, or if she wanted to try something new, daughter was adamant that it be the "usual". So I baked the cake Tuesday night and on Wednesday when I got home from work, I made the icing and assembled the cake, with daughter and her boyfriend assisting in licking the beaters and scraping out the bowl!

I'm not really one to post pictures of us online, but thought I'd make an exception. Here's daughter and her boyfriend at the restaurant.

She took this picture of her ol' ma and pa.

This is all of us back at the house for cake. Yes, 17 year old son is doing bunny ears behind her head. And yes, that is a lot of facial hair (when did my baby grow a beard???).

This past week was not the most stellar week in terms of the weather. The days have been cool, verging on down right cold, grey, and rainy. The rain continues to fall and we are all getting a little tired of it. I still have much yard work to be done, but the rain is making all of my perennials and bulbs grow very well, so tearing out and cutting back last year's growth is going to be a bit more difficult. I know many parts of Ontario are getting more rain and flooding than we are, so I'm at least grateful for that. Today's plans involve throwing a hunk of beef in the magical cooking pot, and doing a thorough house cleaning. Who says I don't have an exciting life?

  1. Good looking family! Your daughter is very pretty and takes after you I think. (I spent all morning cleaning my daughter's cooker/oven. The things we do for love.)

  4. Your daughter is as cute as a button and las just like you!

Do you remember when your son was a baby as you kissed his feet because they were just darn cute? And now he has big hairy man feet. Yeah, I have a son too. 😂

    1. Yes, it was a different experience for me to have my son grow up, than my daughter. I think the biggest thing (apart from the facial hair) was that I would no longer hear his little boy voice again after it changed. My daughter just grew into a more graceful, slightly bigger version of her little self, but my son got taller than me, more angular, smelled different! (ha ha), and yes, big feet.

  7. It is amazing how your children cling to the routines of yesteryear. Mine are the same and are now passing our little rituals on to the grandchildren. I still have to make a plum pudding for Christmas dinner and it MUST be lamb at Easter!

  9. What a handsome couple your daughter and her fella make. (And not a piercing or tattoo in sight. Hope I didn't step on any toes?)

Your lovely daughter looks much like you. You're both beauties.

    1. No toes stepped on! They are both very traditional and have good heads on their shoulders and tattoos and piercings aren't really their thing.

    1. They really do. I honestly feel like I was just gearing up for dance recital, or making her lunch for school, or reading a story before bedtime. I'm just happy to have her at home over the summer. I suspect I won't have that opportunity in the near future.

  13. I'm glad you posted the photos! It's fun to see our blog friends! And what a great celebration. I love that she wanted the traditional mom-cake. Now, that's a great girl!

It's been sunny here yesterday and today so maybe it's coming your way. I hope so. It's been a tough spring!

  15. What a lovely, happy post this is and so nice to see pictures of all of you. Belated birthday wishes to your daughter. I love it that she chose the 'usual'. I used to worry that our daughters would tire of the same old things year after year, but they also always ask for the cake and decorations that they enjoyed as children (and they are considerably older than your daughter!)

  16. Happy belated birthday wishes to your daughter. Great photos of everyone. Birthday cakes are SO special, after all it's where we put our wishing candles ... so nice that you baked that usual cake (col). This morning there is evidence of that heavy frost overnight - I am ready for some real nice spring weather. Happy week ahead Jenn. ... Mary-Lou

  19. Love owners who work the floor as well. Great stuff. Happy Birthday to your daughter.

Licking the bowl is a must, so my husband tells me. So funny. Love it.

Excellent pictures. I haven't been able to post my face yet. You give me courage. I'm getting closer.

Your day sounds magical to me. I love those days. Been cold here too, heat on all week but I think, I think ... just maybe, today I'll be able to open the windows.

    Cheers and boogie boogie.
