Holy Cow??

I was doing my regular grocery shopping yesterday. I keep a list with me which I categorize with "produce", "can / box", "dairy / frozen", "deli", "bakery" and "meat". Under the "meat" heading I literally had a "?" because I wasn't sure what I was going to buy. It depended upon what was on sale this week and what looked good.

I was looking at the various cuts of beef and saw this:

This was not a particularly large roast. I realize it is prime rib, but honestly, did this come from a holy cow??? Who would pay this?

I bought a tray of pork chops.

  2. If you've ever wondered why prime rib is so expensive,
we've probably assumed it was because the most desirable
cuts of meat naturally cost more...
It's just an accident of bovine evolution and anatomy that
the part of a steer that provides those tender cuts is
    relatively small...
And since prime rib is high in fat, it should be eaten in
    moderation..

Oh! And the term Holy Cow originated from the Jews, when
God commanded the Israelites to sacrifice a Red Heffer or
Cow, without blemish upon the Altar...
It must be a two year old Cow and the color Red — which
signifies the color of blood, the sacrificial “lamb” in
    this case a Cow...

You were wise to buy a tray of pork chops...!
At least 'everything' on a pig is used and eaten...
    Everything..Except the 'squeak'...! :o).

  3. Wow! I don't eat a lot of meat anymore. Thank goodness! I do like the pork chops though. You have a wonderful day, hugs, Edna B.

  4. I know. The price of just about everything is skyrocketing. But I will admit that piece of meat would have knocked me for a loop. I find myself using more ground beef than anything else in the meat category these days because I can make it go so much farther. When I think of pork chops, I always remember them being 79¢ a pound. I haven't bought them in years, but I'll bet they're more than that now! ;o)

  5. I once went to a butcher to get a goose to try at Christmas. It cost 75 dollars. We had a ham rather.

  6. How do Canadian dollars compare to American dollars? I wonder if that would be like $85 here, because that would be crazy. I am going to Google exchange rates.

  7. I had to laugh at this post. DH always tells the story of waiting in line at Central Market one day as the person in front of him ordered a cut or cuts of meat that totaled over $200. The man who was next in line commented that they were going to be disappointed with him as he was only going to order 2 pounds of ground beef. DH laughed and said, that's OK, he only wanted ONE pound!
It's amazing what people will pay... no cut of meat (IMO) is worth that much money.

  8. Heavens. Even without doing the exchange into euro I can see how darn expensive it is. Wonder who buys it. I would have gone for the pork too.

  9. Unbelievable! My bank account/budget is going to give thanks that I'm vegetarian (col), although Mr Man does eat meat & beef is his favourite. Umm I wonder what Chunk Soup, Beef with Potatoes is costing ...

  10. Jenn, That is too much for a chuck of beef. There's meat market in our town and they were seeing meat packs for that price. Pork, beef and chicken. Time srae hard, why do stores have to jack up prices...it won't help them make up what they've loss, it only will make them lose customers. Blessings, stay strong, xoxo, Susie

  11. I have noticed beef has really gone up in price recently. I don't normally buy it but with son staying here there has been more in our diet. Todays stew had $7.00 worth of beef and it wasn't much. I will just eat a few pieces and he will have the rest.

  13. Crazy, makes me happy not to be a big fan of prime rib. I've never really known why it's considered such a treat. Lately I've been buying more pork, as it costs less and tastes good too.

    Take care and stay well.

  14. Yikes. I bought a roast last week--in the clearance section--for 7.54 and that was a lot for us. We rarely buy beef, so I'm out of touch with prices. But thank goodness for venison. We;d starve if we had to pay that.

  15. I was thinking it looked pretty good. But then, I haven't bought meat for forty years.

  16. I saw the same thing here. We've always wanted to try smoking a prime rib, but not at those prices. That is why my freezer is full of venison.

  17. Beef is not a staple here. That said, I have cooked prime rib roast a few times for a special occasion. It is outrageously expensive. The flavor and tenderness is memorable.

  18. Wowzers! Food Basics and NoFrills had sirloin beef roasts on for three something a pound a couple of weeks ago. I stocked up, well, I think 6. That will take us through the winter. We usually buy a freezer order from a neighbour farmer, but he can't get an appointment with the butcher until late March. The little bit of beef he has is reserved for his own family. They all have homes on the farm.

  19. Our Albertson's here has similar prices on Prime Rib, as did HEB where I used to live. I always wondered who bought those cuts. Entirely out of my price range.

  20. That is expensive, even by British standards. Right now, a medium sized turkey costs about the same.

  21. Wow, that is crazy! I've seen some ridiculous prices on meat lately but this is the worst one yet. I wonder if it's a mistake.

  22. yikes! someone must be buying it or it would not be there I guess.

  23. I don't even look at beef in the grocery stores any more. Pork is more reasonably priced, and even chicken is, at times. I scrutinize any meat I buy for the number of meals I can get out of it, and decide if the price is acceptable.

  24. I have done those prime ribs on special occasions, pretty delicious but yes, pricy.

  25. THAT is crazy. I wonder if it is because so many of the meat plants shut down that there is a shortage of certain cuts of meat? We had two big plants close here because of Covid. It's a crazy world and I wouldn't pay half of that for that meat! xo Diana

  26. Do you get a motorcycle with that cut? (The Heat)

  27. Yikes! That's intense. No roast for me, either!

  28. I shudder at the prices of things every time I go into the grocery store. I looked at a brisket once and quickly put it back. The $100.00 price tag was way too much to handle.

    God bless.

  30. Wow - now I'm glad that my diet consists mainly of vegetables!

  31. Good heavens! That cow must have been more than holy ... it was sacred! But that price would scare me off too. I can eat hamburger. xoxo
