Bloomin' Lovely!

We had such a rainy, cold late spring. As a result, those flowers which would have been in bloom in mid to late June are in bloom now. On the plus side, they are huge and lush due to all the rain. Here's a morning walkabout (well, really, not all that much walking, just around the front porch!)

The delphiniums are just starting to open. Absolutely, heavenly, iridescently blue!!

This is a luscious weigela shrub (sorry, I'd have to look up the precise kind) beside a spiderwort plant.

These sweet little self-seeding dianthus usually don't amount to much, but this year they are putting on quite a show. (Kind of makes me think I need to water more!)

I've had this stachys (big betony) for years, but this is one of its best displays.

The Siberian iris has now faded, as has the lilac tree in the background. Everything else is filling in really well. We have split rail fencing in front of this front garden.

The cranesbill around the bottom of the Norway Spruce has become the perfect ground cover. The bird bath in front of it has two fake metal birds. No other birds use it, although the cat has sat in it occasionally.

Peonies beside the steps. Their scent is heavenly.

Lighter pink dianthus with hostas which exploded this year (again, I'd have to look up what type of hostas these are - once upon a time I knew all my plants - Latin names included, not so anymore).

Well, there you have a July 3rd garden. I'm off to the dentist - yippy.

  1. It looks like a delayed spring and warmer temps have now produced some beautiful colors in your flower garden. The cranesbill was a perfect ring of color around that tree.

    1. I have clumps of that cranesbill in various places. It never fails to produce nice drifts of colour.

  2. Hi Jenn :) Your delphiniums are the most beautiful flowers! And dianthus is my favourite! We had some growing in the middle of the yard last year, we didn't plant them, I hope they come back this year. Hurrah for the dentist, boo and eek! Good luck!

    1. When the flowers dry out, bend them over and let the seeds fall out on the ground, or even give them a few little shakes. I'm back from the dentist and still numb. Old fillings replaced.

  3. Maybe more water is the answer. All of those flowers are so healthy and blooming abundantly. You just can't ask for more.

    1. I generally just let nature take care of watering my flower beds. Obviously that extra water made a big difference - not even any fertilizer!

  4. Hi Jenn,
Your flowers all look so beautiful. Oh I love summer and the beauty of flowers. I bet you smile when you look at your pretties.

    1. Believe it or not, I've never grown sweet peas, but sometimes they grow wild in the ditches (probably not the same as what you would grow in your garden).

  6. I just bought another Weigela last week. Love them, hardy and very colorful with no maintenance. What more can you ask from a plant, it's the perfect shrub!

    1. They really are great shrubs! If I had to choose my top three, it would be those, spirea, and hydrangea.

  7. You have a beautiful garden Jenn. My poor peonies got a bit battered by bad weather. Hope the trip to the dentist went well.

    1. Thanks, Sue. Peonies are one of those plants that really suffer after a heavy rain. Dentist was fine - glad it's done.

    1. Thanks Susie. If only I sat on my porch. When I do, I see something that needs trimming or pulling out... then I'm off doing it!

  10. You do have quite the display of flowers. They look well established; enough to not be a lot of work to maintain.

    1. And it's survival of the fittest. I grow things that grow here and require very little fussing. I haven't divided plants for a long time. Really it's just about weed control.

    1. It really was the ridiculous amount of rain we had - day after day after day... I'll bet you still have a few flowers here and there Diana. Even in pots?

  15. Oh your garden looks amazing, Jenn!! You introduced me to a new plant - Stachys - I've never seen it in my garden center, perhaps it's not good for my zone 5a garden? Everything looks so lush and lovely - your property is gorgeous!

    1. Oh no, they would be fine for your zone! I honestly don't see them either - as I said I've had these plants (divided, etc.) for more years than I can remember (maybe twenty?). Maybe they're just not "in fashion" anymore.

  16. What a wonderful riot of colour! I've reached the same conclusion as you that my garden has benefited from all the rainfall we've had. Perfumed peonies by your steps, how lovely.

I taking notes to refer to as there is lots of room for land scrapping at the new home.

  21. Ohhh, our desert doesn't allow for such loveliness unless we are willing to pay a considerable water bill. I'll enjoy through you though.
