The One Good Thing About Staying Home

I'm on day two of being home sick from work. It is a pain and involves extra work on my part. It is, quite frankly, easier to just go to work, but that's not what I'm about to say.

I am not really a Netflix kind of person. I don't love movies the way my husband and daughter do. They get very excited about a new movie coming out, or a sequel. They will watch new films, old films, horror Hammer films...  I get bored easily and wish for a good book, or I go off and clear away dishes or something.

But as much as I have little use for movies, I have even less use for napping. I don't nap well. Even if I am sick. Yes, I am fully aware that we heal better if we rest, but for the amount of time it takes me to actually fall asleep, and then usually a cat or a phone will disturb me, and upon waking I feel worse, sort of "out of it".

So I planted myself on the couch in pajamas and a robe, pot of tea and toast beside me, and turned to Netflix. I looked through the selections, the new additions, the ones recommended for me, comedies, dramas... and then I spotted Midsomer Murders. I love murder mysteries (prefer reading them to watching them). And I love stories set in England (countryside, not city). Well, this fit the bill! Through my coughing and blowing my nose and shifting to be more comfortable, and getting another glass of water, I have enjoyed three episodes. I may have to continue watching these even if I'm not sick. I'm sure there is someone else out there who is familiar with this series.

I love looking at the backgrounds of the scenes as much as what is actually happening in the storyline. I'd love to experience living in places like those featured in the stories (minus the murdering of course).  Anyway, it is helping to pass the time.

  2. Jenn, I hope you are feeling better. I love movies about kids. Or English or Irish people ...so I can see the country side. LOL. I am not a nap taker either. Blessings to you, get well. xoxo, Susie

  3. I just finished binge watching House Of Cards. I'm onto one now called Bloodline. It took off a little slow, but now is pretty intense and has me nervous to see what is going to happen. It was only two seasons. Breaking Bad was my all time favorite, but yours' sounds good too. I love English fare.

  4. Midsomer Murders has been running here (Queensland, Australia) on free to air for years. We even have it showing on two free to air stations now, one station playing the older episodes and another the newer episodes. It is a show I have often enjoyed, especially when doing an easy knitting or crochet project. I hope you feel better soon.

    1. When my husband came home from work and I told him what I had been watching, he let me know it's been on PBS for years. Sometimes I'm a little slow on the uptake.

    2. It was on TVO here in Mississauga...we watched every single one!
Call the Miswife is fabulous...get the Kleenex out...if you like some smut, House of Cards fits the bill!
Hope you are feeling better real soon....
      Cheers!

  5. I'm just on with Breaking Bad! Midsomer Murders is fantastic gentle to and does manage to keep you guessing right til the end. Yes the villages are gorgeous but you wouldn't want to live there!!!
Jonathan Creek is worth a watch too!

I binge watched Falling Skies and The Walking Dead! Could not get enough!

    1. Oh Rachel, I just can't do Walking Dead. I can read really gruesome murder mysteries, but I cannot watch people's faces being eaten off (complete with sound effects). My son watched all the Breaking Bad episodes and was trying to get us to watch them too.

  6. I'm quite the opposite, I could waste the day away with Netflix and a nap.:) I will definitely have to check Midsomer Murders, it sounds right up my alley. I have been watching The Crown (on Netflix) and it is wonderful.

  7. I have found my twin!!! My feelings exactly. My hubby escapes to movies at least twice a week. I knew he was getting well when he started going to the movies again. IF I am watching a movie- I am usually doing something else, too. lol Multi-tasking? ha

I cannot nap during the day time unless I am dead-sick...and when I wake up I feel worse than I did before I fell asleep. I am like you and usually power through illnesses and find it harder to stay home than to work. lol I will check out Midsomer Murders. Did you watch Call The Midwife? Excellent series set in the 40s(?) in England and it is excellent (and I am NOT a movie watcher either). xo Diana

  8. I haven't even heard of this! I'm just like you, very restless with the TV. I prefer reading or occupying myself with something else. But once in awhile, I stumble across something interesting!

  9. I love reading these comments!! I really enjoy getting to know all of you better. I have heard of Call the Midwife. I might watch it providing it isn't just about giving birth! Linda mentioned some smut regarding House of Cards. One series I LOVED and was seriously sad when it was over was Mad Men. I watched (recorded) every single episode. -Jenn

  10. I own all the Midsomer Murder DVDs just in case they drop off the Netflix list They used to be on PBS station but are no longer on in my area. Lovely villages and beautiful houses.

  11. I used to enjoy watching the original series in the UK. Makes English countryside look very idyllic - these sort of villages are in fact quite rare. And so many murders! Hope you feel better soon, I know what you mean about napping. (I can recommend Call the Midwife too.)

  12. Oh yes Midsomer Murders is excellent! Even the Queen watches Midsomer. May I suggest more excellent British slew TV (no one does murder mystery like the Brits) - Vera; Scott & Bailey; Law & Order UK. I like that they are not bloody gore, have more character development & drama. Call the Midwife is good. Poldark fabulous! Oh yes, move over on the couch & I will make us more tea & toast for a good settle in of who done it ...

  13. I've watched Midsomer from the beginning always on TVO. The scenery is quite lovely. I think Midsomer must be the murder capital of England ;)

  14. I also like British mysteries. Seem to be done so much better than the junk that is put out here for public consumption.

  15. I love Netflix when I'm sick. I can't nap while I'm sick unless I got something in me that knocks me out.

  16. I've seen a few of those a long time ago when they were on regular cable and I loved Midsomer Murders. I need to sign up for AcornTV where all the Brit stuff is and netflix too -- I really want to see The Crown. I love Brit drama and mysteries and here see most of it on PBS but now we (and most stations) can't afford the broadcast rights for those shows that PBS doesn't distribute nationally. Makes me crazy but I understand how expensive they are. So, yes -- services are coming. And Netflix might be soon because I REALLY want to see the Crown.

But now, on a totally different and more important note, I hope each and every day brings you one step closer to a return of strength and an alleviation of coughing and all the other horrid effects you are experiencing -- and that the meds do their trick soon. My fragile little lungs empathize with you and my heart hopes you fully recover soon.

  18. Just saw the latest "Midsomer Murders" on TVO, channel 2 for me. I don't subscribe to Netflix either but catch a lot of this type of show on TVO or PBS (can't stand commercials!) Also I was able to borrow "Game of Thrones" from the library.
