My Little Corner of the World

This past week is so typical of late October. One morning (was it Monday??) we woke to snow already fallen and more snow to come for the rest of the daytime hours. I didn't think to take a picture (what? a blogger who failed to take a picture of something??). I did however capture a morning later in the week. Much of the first snow had melted, and this was a light dusting.

It was actually a beautiful, crispy clear morning.

This snow would not last long either, but it was pretty while it was here.

Iced pumpkin. That sounds like some sort of Starbucks treat. We don't have Starbucks anywhere close to us. I think my sister might think it unimaginable that we don't have a Starbucks, but somehow we soldier on and survive.

The corn has been taken off the fields this past week. I like when it is corn around us (as opposed to soybeans which are short and ugly for most of the time prior to harvest). The properties feel quite tucked in by the high walls of corn. You are looking at our neighbours lawn there. He cares a lot about his lawn. We are not slaves to our lawn. If it is green, it's part of the lawn, whether it is a weed or not. When it is mowed, it all looks the same.

When the weather gets colder, I gravitate toward what are called "Cozy Mysteries". This is not a great work of literature. It is just a nice, easy read, something I can enjoy before I turn the lights off at the end of the day. Now that I have visited England (albeit just one area), I can imagine the setting even better.

As I was taking a quick photo of the book this morning before starting my blog post, I thought you might enjoy an odd juxtaposition that is right beside the chair on which I set the book.

My husband uses this Buddha to hold the charge cord for the tablet. Ancient combined with modern day.

Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

  1. My granddaughter reminded me recently, "It always snows once before Halloween." Not this year; back in the sixties today, and about the same for the next two days. Crazy weather. I'm glad I don't have to look forward to snow in October. Keep warm.

    1. It is incredibly mild today! I didn't even wear a coat, just a sweater. I always feel sad for kids on Hallowe'en when it is freezing cold and snowy. They have to cover up their costumes with a coat!

  2. HAHA! That last photo made me smile :)

I always enjoy your posts. Little tidbits of your life, day to day living, your area, thoughts, etc. These types of posts are always fun.

We had snow earlier this week, too. It didn't last long but it was quite pretty outside.

    1. Oh yes, I've read many Agatha Christie mysteries. Miss Marple is my choice, never got into Poirot.

  4. I loved the picture of the sun streaming thru the bannister . The snow and ice gives me chills ...just looking at them. Blessings, stay warm, xoxo, Susie

  5. We are yet to have our first snow cover, though it did snow a few miles to our north. I still have some firewood to put in. Then my obligatory maintenance is done for this year and it is time to settle in front of the woodstove, with cozy mysteries, a cup of tea and a cat in my lap. Winter is a time, between snow shoveling, that my wife and I tackle all the books we have intended to read. Sometimes I will replace the cup of tea with a glass of good Irish whiskey.

    1. It sounds like perfection, although I would replace the whiskey with a red wine.

  6. I like the juxtaposition of ancient/modern. I feel like I should say something wise here...but...well...I got nothin'.
It's weirdly mild here, too. As in, I saw people at the Market in shorts and t-shirts! I certainly hope November is more seasonable. The world is just too confusing.

    1. It is weird. I was saying to my husband that I was going to put the flannel sheets on the bed, but now I think I'll wait.

  7. Love Buddah and the charger cord. lol
It looks cold there and it is getting colder here, too. This is one of the warmest falls we have ever had that I can remember--kind of scary to think what winter might bring.
Like the sounds of an Iced Pumpkin Latte...lol
Hope you have a good night! xo Diana

    1. Thanks, Diana. I agree that it has been a warm fall. Believe it or not, I've never had an iced latte, pumpkin or otherwise.

  8. I could do quite well without a Starbucks. Overpriced and way too strong. I like the coffee made at home in a old percolator from the 60's.

    1. This may be considered shameful by some, but I drink Maxwell House instant coffee. Milk, no sugar. My parents had a percolator. My sister uses a French press.

  9. Oh my goodness - snow. I love the Buddha holder.

  10. I adore that buddha - shame about the wire connection sitting over his arm though.

  11. Hi Jenn, I like your term, "cozy mysteries", I too have a penchant for them and am especially fond of Medieval Mystery. As for Starbucks, I quit them long ago. As soon as a company starts pushing their politics on me, I dismiss them. FOLGERS! My dad drank that, haven't thought of it in years. My favorite coffee is "Seattles Best"French roast... really rich and good!
As for Buddha, well, someone has to hold that cord.....

  12. Your corner of the world is looking quite beautiful. It's odd, isn't it, this time of year. It looks so quiet and gentle once the fields are down. Quiet autumn after the big show of color. This is so very pretty.
