It is now the second day of July and we've had some lovely hot days as well as some big rains. This year I planted my vegetable garden in rows, instead of my usual blocks. When you plant in blocks, you can fit more in, but I wanted a traditional look to my garden.
As a result, things are growing and getting bigger. I still have many barriers in place to keep the bunnies at bay. They especially love tiny beet seedlings. I have replanted a couple of times.
Underneath the "ghost" are two zucchini plants. I have had problems with cucumber beetles for years now, to the point where I don't even bother to grow cucumbers. But I have enough fabric that I can cover the zucchinis and just lift it to pollinate and water, if necessary.
Something different that I did this year was to plant a double row of zinnias and cosmos. I just put the seed in the ground in very late spring and they are coming up very well. I can't wait until they start blooming! I planted all of my tomatoes inside and had grow lights on them. I did the same with my peppers, but I did buy a four pack of jalapeno peppers.
I also have green beans, yellow beans, two kinds of lettuce, carrots (they are not coming up so well), onions, beets, potatoes, basil and dill which self-seeded from last year. I did plant some strawberry plants but they are only just getting established. I will have to wait until next June to get some berries.
Anything I didn't or can't grow, I can just procure from one of the many Amish farm stands in my area. How is your garden growing?
Amish farms! That sounds like a sweet respite from a busy world. How do they keep the bunnies away?
ReplyDeleteThey plant A LOT so maybe can handle a bit of bunny damage.

DeleteI think your garden looks beautiful and so neat. And soon you'll be reaping all the rewards.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jeanie! Lettuce can be eaten soon.
DeletePretty garden! It sounds like it is doing well.
ReplyDeleteNo beets in my garden this year as I have enough canned. Carrots had to be planted three times before I got good germination. I planted the last time so thickly that now I am thinning like crazy. Lettuce is done for now but a new planting is coming up.
In general, the garden is doing okay, just later than usual because of all the rain in early Spring.
I had to replant carrots, beets and a bit of lettuce.
DeleteI envy your Amish markets where you can buy what you can't grow. Your garden sounds wonderful and it looks great! I love zinnias and cosmos, those should really help with attracting pollinators.
ReplyDeleteNo problem with pollinators here- tons of bees and butterflies π.
DeleteYour garden does look great. No garden here. Would have planted some in my trug... but got too hot too soon. Do have a bell pepper plant and it's doing well. And my inside plants are thriving!
ReplyDeleteI worry about covering things like zucchini that needs pollination...but keeping beetles off is important!
ReplyDeleteTomatoes and aubergine plants in the greenhouse here..and drying garlic! I've got three small melon plants but I don't know if anything will come of them.
Runner beans are just starting to run...squash bd zucchini plants are there but a bit reluctant! I've had germination problems...but that could be old seed!
Beetroot are doing ok. And a few carrots. Broad bean plants are ok..no blackfly yet, but I'm keeping an eye out!!
I've just put half the seedling leeks out..my back needs a rest before doing the rest!
All that and it is a running battle to crop the currants before the blackbirds...I don't mind sharing some...but as far as they are concerned they don't do sharing!!
It is indeed July! How fast the year is going. Gardening time is the best. Your's is looking good!
ReplyDeleteI bought a couple of zucchini plants but I think they were wrongly labelled. Just waiting to see what they produce. I have tomatoes, kale and cucumbers so far.
ReplyDeleteWe do a mixture of block gardening and row gardening now. Seems to work, but it looks very strange.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
