Asking for an Opinion

I was wondering if any of you use Spotify. It's an app that lets you download music. I use the free basic level of Spotify, but because it's free, I only get some of the features. For example, I am only allowed to listen to playlists that I have made on "shuffle", I don't get to choose what I listen to first, and next, and so on. If a song comes on that I don't want at that time, I can skip it, but I'm only allowed to skip ahead about four times, then a message comes up asking if I want to buy the Premium level. Also, I always have to be online to listen to the music.

So... Premium costs a bit of money and apparently you can listen to what you want in the order you want and there are no advertisements that come on and interrupt the music.

I NEVER EVER pay for apps. If it isn't free, I don't want it. Mind you, I'm not a big techy person, so I likely don't even know what I'm missing.

I'm asking because I need something I can listen to in different settings, not just in my own home. I've started (to prove it to myself that I can) to run on the treadmill. I began with walking and running, alternating by looking at the minutes that go by and using those to gauge when I walk and when I run. I hated it until I started to listen to music when I ran/walked and then it was so much "more fun" (it's not really fun at all, but it's tolerable with music) Now I make little bargains with myself that I'll run for three songs, or whatever. When I listen to music from my phone on Spotify, I am stuck listening to whatever song comes up, and it's pretty limiting.

So... any opinions about Spotify premium? Do you have it? Is it worth it? Do you have the family plan? Thanks all.

  1. Hi Jenn, I don't pay for music, without getting into the sorted details, I download, bad me. So I can choose the songs on my IPod for when I work out. I laughed so hard at that photo you posted hee hee hee...It's very true that working out with music makes it more fun, and you can walk to a rhythm too. Do they have a one month free trial you can use? It might be worth trying it out as long as you can cancel your membership.

  2. I don’t have Spotify but I do pay for iTunes and LOVE it. But, I am in my car all day long for work and music is cheap therapy.

  3. I use Music maniac pro for free downloads. It worked great until I had an update, but it is worth a try. It was free because I am notoriously cheap. Good luck. I also like the photo.

  4. I wish I could help, but I'm as non-tech as you can get. I definitely agree that music really gives you the get up and go. I do exercises in front of my TV with music videos on!

    Good luck, Jenn!

  6. I don't pay but I use Amazon prime which I do pay for anyway. So with my Prime I get Amazon music bundled in. This allows downloads and includes a gym play list that can be played offline on your phone.

  7. I have used Spotify but I don't pay for anything. I have downloaded the music but it does have the bad points like you were saying, I just don't feel right paying for something like that. I don't think they should charge for it anyway.

  8. Thanks for the suggestions and thoughts so far. We don't have Amazon Prime (don't buy enough online to merit it) so that's unfortunately a no go. I've not heard of Music Maniac Pro. I think I should probably ask a teenager, too. Good thing I have one, but he's currently asleep (shocking). -Jenn

  9. I don't. I don't have a phone that lets me do that and I don't download. Usually online I might find something on youtube but I'm not the person to ask, unfortunately! Good luck in your search!

  10. My teenager answers like I'm another teenager. It's a foreign language. And, I don't pay for music.

  11. I don't have that app, Jenn. I do pay for iTunes and love it---You don't pay a monthly fee-just a small fee for the songs you want to download and then they are yous forever and you can pick and choose how you want them lined up to play. I have had iTunes for several years so have slowly built up ny 'bank' of songs. I have about 8 hours of music I love loaded on now.

Good luck figuring it out...OR ask a savvy teenager- they know how to work the system and I know my grandgirls get all sorts of music for free. xo Diana

  12. I don't know Spotify but know a lot of people that use it. I use Pandora. My favorite stations are Folk Rock, Mark Knopfler, 70's Rock, 80's Alternative and Amos Lee.

  13. I asked my college student, and he immediately said "YES", it's worth it. It's cheaper for students (maybe half price?) but he really likes it!

  16. I don't like to pay for apps either. I used to like Pandora, but my brother shared a family code for Spotify and I love it. I think he received five codes to share. I can download my personalized playlists and listen to them while offline. I like this for when I take long road trips. For exercising I prefer using my iPod Classic. It has my entire music collection on it. If you aren't against doing some "illegal" downloading, you could get the Firefox browser and add a browser extension that allows you to convert YouTube videos into MP3 files which you can then add to your phone. That way you can personalize your playlists. I recommend getting only an extension that does not require you to go to another page to convert the files. Usually it's an extension that adds a "download" button to the YouTube page. I've only done this a handful of times and only many years ago, but I assume it still works the same way. I am not a tech savvy person at all, but I asked my college aged son how to do it.

  17. I don't use it. I use Sirius in the car, and my playlists at home.

  18. When I'm online and too lazy to go into the living room to turn on Pandora, I will use Spotify. Only the free app, I don't pay either. When a song comes on that I don't like I use the time to throw a ball for my dog or get up and dust...kind of a challenge to myself to move away from the computer! I also have Amazon but Pandora is truly my favorite. Though, after reading Sophie's comment, maybe Spotify is worth the investment!
