Babysitting the Plants

Last weekend, daughter and I went to the Amish greenhouses about 15 minutes away to purchase the flowers we are going to plant in a number of urns, pots, and window boxes for her wedding this summer. Her colour scheme is white / cream, green, and gold. In her pots and urns there can also be the palest of pinks just to add a little colour.

Of course, here in Canada, the month of May can still be iffy when it comes to weather and true to form the temperature dipped dangerously low with frost warnings, so I had to bring everything into the mudroom for two nights so we didn't lose any of them to the cold.

Otherwise, they live on the back porch and I keep them watered and rotated until we can get the big urns, etc. in place and start to plant them.

Do any of you gardeners have something like this?

This is my bag of old bedsheets that I use only for covering plants (especially tomatoes in the early Autumn, again when there is a danger of frost). I draped the flowers one night when it was quite cold, but had to physically move everything in on the other nights.

I will take some pictures of the planted urns and pots when that happens. I have reassured my daughter that I will keep everything watered and fertilized so they are all looking good for August.

  1. Is the wedding going to be in a family home? I went to a wedding at a reception centre last night and the flowers looked lovely outside for the ceremony. But inside for the reception, they needed your help.

    1. Yes the whole wedding (ceremony and reception) is being held at our home. We will be using hydrangeas from my gardens for table top decor.

  2. I don't have anything to cover plants in case of frost. I just keep my fingers crossed. Haven't bought much yet as the nights are still cool here. Your garden will be gorgeous when the big day arrives!

  4. Looking forward to seeing all the pots and urns planted.
Yes on the pile of old sheets and blankets for frost protection! I've had to use them a bit this spring as well.

    1. I would gladly take a good 25C of your weather! We were in long sleeves and jackets working outside today. Blah!

  6. I just started planting today. As the next two weeks show no frost. If it changes, well the old sheets will be out to cover everything.

    God bless.

  7. Oh yes, every gardener in Canada has a good selection of old bedsheets, light blankets and burlap sacks for just such occasions!

  13. Your flowers are very pretty, and I can see it all coming together with the Wedding scheme. I live in Australia, but love visiting our daughter in Ontario regularly. We are going later this year and as I have never seen an Amish community there I will enquire about that. Best wishes for your wedding preparations; it is lovely when our kids get married.
